CWL says that Subba Rao related about complex nature of HPB and at the
end write "this true explanation". 
>From it one can say that CWL might have been told by Subba Rao about
HPB's nature, and later CWL might have independently investigated and
found that it was true. Confidence shown by CWL in this explanation of
SR also indicates that CWL had reasons to believe it was true. CWL
might have consulted other disciples and perhaps Masters to know
whether that SR's story was true. And that could have given him so
much confidence in that explanation. 
In entire Theosophical writing most funny passages I read so far were
A.O. Humes reply to Master K.H. about HPB's leaving one principle in
Tibet.
