A POOR surfer who divides his time between Hawaii and the US snowfields may have revolutionised physics with his "Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything" paper.
Physicists around the world are astounded by the work of 39-year-old Garrett Lisi, who told the UK's Telegraph newspaper that ?being poor sucks? after releasing his theory of how everything in the universe is linked.
?It?s hard to figure out the secrets of the universe when you?re trying to figure out where you and your girlfriend are going to sleep next month,? Lisi said.
Lisi?s theory explains a reason why three fundamental forces of nature are not only connected to each other but with gravity as well, the newspaper reported.
His theory is that electromagnetic force, the atom-binding strong force and the radioactive-controlling weak force ?weave? together with gravity to form our universe.
Physicist Lee Smolin from Canada?s Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics said that the paper was ?one of the most compelling unification models? he had seen in years.
?Although he cultivates a bit of a surfer-guy image it?s clear he has put enormous effort and time into working the complexities of this structure out over several years,? Professor Smolin told the Telegraph.
David Ritz Finkelstein from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US said that the work was fascinating.
?Some incredibly beautiful stuff falls out of Lisi?s theory? this must be more than coincidence and he really is touching on something profound,? Professor Ritz Finkelstein said.
Lisi told the New Scientist magazine that when he discovered that his work matched the ?E8? shape ? which after 120 years, mathematicians began to fully understand it this year ? his excitement overwhelmed him
?My brain exploded with the implications and the beauty of the thing,? he said.
?I thought: ?Holy crap, that?s it!??
