Well, for a long time there was a very rational basis for the fear.   That 
was what the 50 year game was all about.
 
It is of course nonsense to worry about communism now.  The Chinese  are too 
interested in making money for ideology to matter much and Putin's  motives 
seem to be pure nationalism, he wants Russia to be taken seriously  again, 
forgetting what happened the last time that it was.
 
But the UN is a joke, a bloated bureaucracy that can do nothing, solve  
nothing and the only real threat it presents is the possibility that the hot air  
emanating from it may somehow scald someone.  Still, when Crazy Old Alice  was 
writing there were lots of people who actually thought it might amount to  
something so we can't blame her too much.
