Cass,

IMHO too many people are told what to think instead of learning how to think for themselves. If I'm interested in knowing the truth, I investigate. Having investigated Crowley in some detail and at length what comes to mind at this moment is the imagery of Atu XVIII The Moon, with the sacred beetle - the dung beetle - pushing the sun across the sky at midnight - as a ball of dung - to rise at dawn between the twin towers of Khem. This imagery, of course, is the one in the Crowley/Harris Thoth Tarot deck where the M.T. quoth in The Book of Thoth:

This is the threshold of life; this is the threshold of death. All is doubtful, all is mysterious, all is intoxicating. Not the benign, solar intoxication of Dionysus, but the dreadful madness of pernicious drugs; this is a drunkenness of sense, after the mind has been abolished by the venom of this Moon. This is that which is written of Abraham in the Book of the Beginning: "An horror of great darkness came upon him." One is reminded of the mental echo of subconscious realization, of that supreme iniquity which mystics have constantly celebrated in their accounts of the Dark Night of the Soul. But the best men, the true men, do not consider the matter in such terms at all. Whatever horrors may afflict the soul, whatever abominations may excite the loathing of the heart, whatever terrors may assail the mind, the answer is the same at every stage: "How splendid is the Adventure!"

No guts no glory -- that's what I say.

I often wondered about Crowley. He for sure was on the spiritual path but for years believed that he was on the left hand path as his work leant heavily on debauchery?

You confirm my election to start with the source works rather than reading someone else's best 'interpretation' of same. That having been said, however, I was wondering what 'Esoteric Buddhism' is, so I will be needing the "Cliff's Notes" on that soon.

BTW I spent a great deal of time with the works of A. Crowley, inspired by his Tarot deck largely based on the imagery as painted by Lady Frieda Harris. I later found out that he was and is considered, notwithstanding the reputation, to be a first class kabalist. I would probably not be capable of thinking for myself had I not started with the M.T. Along the way I made it my special business to look further into the lives and works of those whom he bashed. And here I am today, feeling quite at home.

Birds of a feather ...

Hello Daniel
I have to dissagree whit you with getting introduced to Theosophy througth Sinnett.
First of all
Esoteric Buddhism it´s a beautifull book, but I see myself Sinnett as a bit controverse figure in theosophical movement. I would say he was for theosophist what Alleyster Crouwley would be to Rossycrutians.
Also Esoteric Buddhism has mistakes that Blabatsky has to dedicate a couple of pages on her introduction to the Secret Doctrine, to correct.
I think it´s better to read it if you are allready warn of the mistakes, to aboid confusion.
Second and most important to me, is that the Power and Depth that Blabatsky espress on her writtings, inherent on her nature, makes her the best to get introduced on her teachings. Maybe her use of language it´s a bit strange, but the strength of her inner Self, can be felt througth her words, as sounds and colours, something that someone used to handle tarot cards will eassyly percive.
Jane will also find herself very familiar with her I think as she references often to Rossycrutians as Eliphas Levi.
