In the article on "Theosophy" in the Encyclopædia Britannica,
we find the following statement:

The contemporary theosophical movement was born with the founding of 
the Theosophical Society in New York City in 1875 by Helena Petrovna 
Blavatsky (1831?91), Henry Steel Olcott (1832?1907), and William Quan 
Judge (1851?96).
