Thanks Theo I had read that the archaeological evidence was iffy at best but didn't have the time to find a reference for it.

After all, I have newspaper clippings going back to the early 19th century in which scientists 
ask themselves 
whether or not the Egyptians knew electricity - how else were they to light the long, dark 
passageways in the 
pyramids as no sooth was found, or if the pyramids were constructed with cement stones 
instead of hard, cut 
stones.
