Mr. Deveney on the HPB letter:
"...Judge...has simply become a holy Arhat..."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

First, let me quote two pronouncements given to us on
Theos-Talk.

PRONOUNCEMENT #1
===========================================================
No one, not even D. Caldwell or J. Algeo, has had the nerve to say
that those "obviously spurious letters" (Radha's words about them) are
legitimate.

Historians and Scholars have no business in publicizing well-known
lies. Only this kind of people.
==========================================================

PRONOUNCEMENT #2
==========================================================
If John Patrick Deveney is involved in the work of Volume II, as I
have heard, one might hope that perhaps some improvement will occur,
and no unidentified attacks to HPB will be presented to the readers
as if belonging to her own writings, as this would be unscholarly,
untruthful -- and treacherous.
==========================================================

As far as I can tell, the historian and scholar John Patrick Deveney
has been doing his part in "publicizing" some of HPB's letters to Mr.
Aksakov.

In fact, Mr. Deveney in at least two of his publications quotes HPB
using the book THE MODERN PRIESTESS OF ISIS.

In one publication, Mr. Deveney says it was HPB's claim that Judge
was involved in certain occult pratices. He quotes from HPB's letter
to Aksakov:

=================================================
There is Judge, who has simply become a holy Arhat.
He sees visions and he flies; and he asserts that he passes
out of the body every night and roams in infinite
space. I ring a bell in Forty-seventh Street, in my room,
and he hears it at Brooklyn, eight miles off; he starts
off at once, and in two hours he appears at my call.
=================================================
Quoted from Vsevolod S. Solovyoff, A MODERN PRIESTESS
OF ISIS (London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1895), p. 276.

And in a THEOSOPHICAL HISTORY article (July 2003), Mr. Deveney
publishes a lecture by Willam Quan Judge himself confirming what was
written in the HPB letter above.

Mr. Deveney prefaces this lecture with these words:

==========================================================
We are now in a position to give further details of Judge's
magical development and, in the process, to strengthen the conclusion
that the early T.S. was focused on practical occult development
and on the work of Mr. Felt. Psychische Studien, the German-language
spiritualist journal published by H.P. Blavatsky's Russian
correspondent, Alexander Aksakov, preserves the text of a lecture
given by Judge at a meeting of the T.S. which, from other sources,
probably took place on October 18, 1876.....
==========================================================
Quoted from p. 12.

As far as I know, Mr. Deveney (who is a historian and scholar)
considers the HPB letters to Mr. Aksakov to be her real letters. Of
course, if anyone doubts this, then one can contact Mr. Deveney
through THE THEOSOPHICAL HISTORY journal.

Some food for thought.
