Re Using Pen-names

Re Using pen-names

   Using pen-names for writing articles
I think is OK, and common practice. I
think HPB used "Radai Bai"(?) for writing
"The Caves and Jungles of Hindustan" for
a Russian paper, or otherwise. Judge
used them too. This is an innocent
practice, directly related to article
& book writing. But it is not the same
thing as using a phoney name to harrass
people, that you would not risk doing
with your real name.

Pen-names can be used for financial
and personal protection. If someone
thinks there is not persecution of
theosophists, then he is just blind or
naive. Carrithers (Adalai Waterman),
had his house attacked by armed men,
Endersby had someone try to run him
off the road (explained in "Theosophical
Notes"), and there are endless cases
never reported. This can all be explained
away, to coincidences, etc. - but the
real reason is that there are different
spheres of influence in occult nature.
If you attract the attention of the
wrong influences, strange things can
happen. The half-wit that attacks you
doesn't know why - he just knows "I
just don't like that guy!"
Anita Atkins also originally used her
real name in some Blavatsky defense work
(as appearing in 60's "Theosophical Notes.")

<There is what some would call a tradition
of using a pseudonym or incognito [that is, CHANGING
NAMES]
in some circles of the Theosophical movement.

<For several years I corresponded with a gentleman
named Adlai E.
Waterman.

<It was only later that I discovered that this name
was a pseudonym
(incognito) used by a well-known Theosophical
historian who wrote
under that incognito one of the best known defenses of
Madame
Blavatsky against the charges of Hodgson and Coulomb.

<Later when Waterman's book was reviewed in the
Journal of the Society
for Psychical Research, a writer in the same journal
brought this
fact up (that is, that Adlai Waterman was an
"incognito") and made
a "negative" comment about this!!

<See what Leslie Price and the late John Cooper wrote
about "Adlai E.
Waterman" at:

http://www.blavatskyfoundation.org/

<I remember more than 20 years ago writing to Sylvia
Cranston and
Joseph Head, co-authors of 2 well-known anthologies on
reincarnation
and Cranston later was the author of a Blavatsky
biography.

See
http://www.theosociety.org/pasadena/ts/reincbk2.htm

and

http://www.theosociety.org/pasadena/ts/hpbbio2.htm

<Of course, Cranston's real name is Anita Atkins but I
only found out
about that much later.

<Joseph Head's real name is ------ --------.

And I have talked many times on the phone to Carey
Williams who is
the co-author of this book:

<Reincarnation:
A New Horizon in Science, Religion, and Society
By Sylvia Cranston and Carey Williams

<Carey Williams is the incognito or pseudonym of
------- --------.

Another example.

<I have several file folders of material written by
Wane Kell.

See one of Wane's articles at:

http://www.hctheosophist.com/archives/pdf/hc199806.pdf

<on page 17.

Several of Wane Kell's articles will also be found in
THE ECLECTIC
THEOSOPHIST.

<See also one of Wane Kell's contributions at
Theos-Talk:

http://tinyurl.com/9jkv9

<Wane Kell is the incognito or pseudonym of -------
-------- who has
been for many years a subscriber and poster to various
WWW internet
Theosophical discussion groups including Theos-Talk.

William Q. Judge also had many incognitos. See Ernest
Pelletier's
book for the list of names.

<And of course the modern Theosophical Movement was
founded by two
individuals behind the scenes who used the famous
pseudonymns
(incognitos) "Morya" and "Koot Hoomi." HPB even
writes that these
names are not their real birth names.

<Paul Johnson has written pages of speculation on
these "incognitos"
of Morya and Koot Hoomi and the supposed real persons
behind them.

<Many more examples could be given.
