It was no secret:
The "Editing" of 1893 ed of SECRET DOCTRINE
In the introductory material to the 1893 ed. of the SD, it
was noted that the volumes were "edited".
And furthermore, the whole Theosophical world
was notified that the new edition would be edited.
For example, in December 1891, the following notice was published in
The Path, The Vahan, and The Theosophist by Annie Besant and G. R. S.
Mead:
========================================================
The second edition of H.P.B.'s masterpiece being exhausted, a third
edition has to be put in hand immediately. Every effort is being made
to thoroughly revise the new edition, and the editors earnestly
request all students who may read this notice to send in as full
lists of ERRATA as possible.... It is important that the ERRATA of
the first part of Volume I should be sent in IMMEDIATELY.
========================================================
Also I have never seen an indication that William Q. Judge disapproved
of this plan to "thoroughly revise" the SD. Is there something?
The point I'm making is simply that the revision and "corrections"
were no secret and was publicly announced.
