THE FIRST BREATH

Rudy,
Thanks.
The first meeting of the theosophical movement, September 7, 1875 in N.Y., had no list of presences.
You will find many of the names, though, in the minutes of the Sept 8 meeting (see it in HPB's Collected Writings, volume I, pp. -- I think -- 124-125).
Sylvia Cranston's book "HPB", which you probably have, gives part of the list of those present in both meetings.
Michael Gomes, in his "The Pioneers of the Theos. Movement", may have investigated further. I should also check with the book "The Theosophical Movement" and other sources.
(A better mention to this topic could take place by, say, early September 2007. I will try to remember that. )
There has been a great exageration of the importance of November 17. By Mid-November 1875, the movement had been already alive and active for some time.
Of course, HPB did write that November 17 is a strong date (along with two others) in the year's cycle. So it did make sense to have an "inaugural speech" in November 17.
Yet the decision to create the movement was made on Sept 7, and its actual creation took place on Sept. 8th.
By that, I do not suggest that November 17 is a date without a meaning. Only, the evening of Sept. 8 is, no doubt, the moment when the movement had its "first breath".
Best regards, Carlos.
