If the physical cause alone is considered then there is a paradox.

But if we consider the electro-magnetic patterns that underlie the PHYSICAL,
(in the astral and the pranic planes) the paradox vanishes, as we are forced
to consider the whole subject of what we perceive as fossilized traces and a
few scattered remains of early changes, and our Science now thinks  they
represent the causes that must move the physical.

THEOSOPHY asks us to consider the 7-fold nature of man as a miniature copy
of the vast UNIVERSAL in its tremendous evolutionary process and timeless
journey.  

Each “form” has a part to play in the development of the whole of our world
and the Universe.  There are no isolated places or separations.  Every
MONAD, whether animating egg or chicken, plays it allotted part under the
Karma of the whole.  And individually it also progresses.  Each one of us as
a thinking “Manu – man or woman, carries internally as a part of his / her
skandhas the imprint of their Karma as an individual, as well as a part of
the Karma of the whole.

This why BROTHERHOOD is so emphasized.

At an early stage of our evolutionary progress reproduction used the egg
form. (We still do in the womb. S D II 166)  [ see  S D  I  65, 69,  354,
359-61, 365-7, 443,   S D  II  122, (3RD. Race 131-3, 165-6,)  181-3, 659.

a degree) that cosmic ideation, (or Astral model) precedes the physical body
and that as that astral body descends thru matter Homogenous becomes
Heterogeneous and that at some point the monads using that vehicle begin the
return climb upwards using the proper means available for reproduction. 
Although cosmic ideation may be graphically represented as a germ, egg,
or embryo, with respect to activity upon the plane of matter, eggs do not
produce eggs, chickens do!  As an architectural designer and builder I would
design with the picture of the whole building in my mind first and then go
about figuring out the pieces and combinations necessary to produce that
structure.  But I would always start with a picture of the whole concept
first.   So that even if the egg were to have been (as a physical entity)
produced first I still believe that the original idea (astral model) of the
chicken was pre-egg and proceeding forth from the mind of the ALL.   May the
masters show tolerance for any unintentional bruising of the teachings, 
these are only thoughts as to the degree that I am capable of.
