Dear Gary:

My understanding of the following passage - The mind is the great 
slayer of the real – is that it refers to the part of the mind where 
it registers information based on the five senses.  Some call it the 
sensory mind.  Since the senses are not accurate, it is the slayer 
of the real.   The next sentence – Let the Disciple slay the Slayer 
is the instruction to the student to conquer the five senses, 
overcoming the illusion of Maya.   The subsequent two passages in 
the book describe the changes that occur to both seeing and hearing 
upon awakening.  

When to himself his form appears unreal, as do on waking all the 
forms he sees in dreams;

When he has ceased to hear the many, he may discern the ONE – the 
inner sound which kills the outer.
