"The first exercise of Dugpaship is to psychologize people. Every man
has a potential Dugpa in him." Are not people psychologized daily by
the media? By the Church? By governments? Have we somehow managed
to free the inner Dugpa in much of humanity? Does not the church say
to fear for your soul and its eternal torment if you do not follow our
creed? Does not the media say fear for your jobs if you do not allow
these multi-national corporations to merge? Do not governments say to
fear for your lives if you do not give us greater power? Fear seems
to be one half of the psychologizing equation. The other seems to be
sympathy. The Church tells us to give to them and they will make the
world a better place by helping the less fortunate. The media tells
us that big companies can make goods cheaper so that the poor can
purchase more thereby improving their lives (yet prices rise, jobs
disappear, and the number of poor increase). The governments tell us
to give them money and they will make sure that even the poorest will
be looked after. Then when your brother loses his job and becomes
depressed you find that you are unable to help because governments,
churches, and corporations have all your extra money. Strangely
enough, your brother does not qualify for help from any of these
groups. Somehow, without realizing it, you and your neighbours have
been made slaves to a system that you are not allowed to opt out of,
even if it occurs to you that you might want to.

Fear and sympathy can make slaves of us all. These, I suspect are
valuable tools of the Dugpa.
