Because it is part of the great human adventure.  It will yield  benefits to 
humanity that will last for millenia, and it is cheap at the  cost.  It is, in 
point of fact, money far better spent than on those who  will, after all, die 
anyway.  If we spend all our money on the surplus of  humanity, we will have 
nothing left for that which matters, like the future of  humanity.
 
There are times for ruthlessness and this is one of them.   We must go to 
Mars and damn the cost.
