Seneca, Cass -- and Jacob

CASS,
So you say you respect Socrates?
Then you should study Seneca's life and philosophy and his own great dignity at death.
And then Count Alessandro Cagliostro's life and his moral strength when
persecuted in one country after the other.
And Galilei, Bruno, Miguel de Molinos, St. John of the Cross, Paracelsus, J-J Rousseau..
And then HPB's life (try Cranston). And W. Judge.
Then you may understand perhaps why I depend our dear OLD LADY from authors like Paul Johnson or editors like John Algeo. (On whose 'policy' with regard to the HPB Letters Gregory Tillett wrote an important document published in 2001 in FOHAT.)
There is a whole line of Western Sages sacrificing lives for mankind's progress and they all deser RESPECT. Not to talk about their disciples. This is fairly documented since Pythagoras, who was persecuted for the same reason.
What about the Eastern line? Many others.
These persons and souls deserve respect. They have earned my gratitude. I am their sincere student.
Read about the Jacob's Ladder? Worthwhile doing it -- a masonic theme by the way.
Best regards, Carlos Cardoso Aveline

In Athenian jurisprudential practice, the accusers asked for a certain penalty if the accused is convicted, and the accused argues for a different, usually more lenient penalty. For instance, if the accusers ask for the death penalty, it was customary for the accused to ask for banishment. The lesser punishment tended to be chosen in just about every case. Socrates' second speech is an argument for a different penalty rather than death, but Socrates argues that he is doing a great service to the state of Athens, so that the appropriate penalty would be to pay him a stipend for the rest of his life to support him in his criticism of individual citizens of Athens. This goes over like a lead balloon, and the senate sentences him to death. In his final speech, Socrates tells the Athenians that they will be shamed in the future for their action and explains why he doesn't fear death:
