Cass,

Read, or re-read, the "Apology of Socrates".  Read also Xenophon on Socratets.  You will see that Socrates is no fiction character.  Jesus Christ is fiction, or myth, not the classical thinkers, Cass. 

By reading Xenophon and Plato you will  realize that  Socrates lived; he was a sage, and that Plato owes a lot to him, as Xenophon, J. J. Rousseau  and many others do -- in a conscious way.   

Read also Crito and Phaedo (not to mention other Dialogues) and you will see see my point.
