SLANDER, PRISON, TORTURE OR DEATH

HPB saw and wrote about something which she has in common with Julian the "Apostate", Socrates of Athens, and many others: 
 
“In the days of Pythagoras the heliocentric system was a mystery taught only in the silence and secrecy of the inner Temples; and Socrates was put to death for divulging it, under the inspiration of his DAIMON (1). Now-a-days, the revealers of systems which clash with religion or science are not put to physical death, but they are slowly tortured to their dying hour with open calumny and secret persecutions, when ridicule proves to be of no avail.” (2) 
 
Indeed, when the Vatican couldn’t  kill “heretics” physically any longer,  it started to use slanders.  
 
In the late 18th century, Count Cagliostro had the privilege to receive both treatments: slander and prison  (if not death). 
 
Occasionaly,  scholars do help the Vatican by giving its action a ‘scientific’ cover-up.  Sometimes entusiastically so.
