If I may interject, in one of the 1912-1913 issues of The Theosophist,  
(forgive me, if I forget which one, it has been over 25 years since I saw it)  
there was a commentary by George Arundale that since Mrs. Besant was in constant  
contact with the Masters, everything that she said should be regarded as 
coming  from them.  He was roundly condemned in the correspondence section of the  
next issue for that, but the fact that he was willing to say such a thing, 
given  his closeness to Mrs. Besant, is a pretty good indicator that she actually 
 believed that and was using him to float the idea and be the lightning rod 
if it  did not fly.
 
As to actual contact, I think she was only in contact with her  imagination.
