the existence of these mendicant ascetics can be traced at least a century
earlier than chronological Christianity, it is an additional proof that
lassou or Jeshu lived during the reign of Alexander Jannæus at Lyd (or Lud),
where he was put to death as stated in the Sepher Toldos Jeshu.” T

JESUS OF MYTH AND LEGEND
"A thick film of allegory and blinds, the "dark sayings" of fiction and
parable, thus covers the original esoteric texts from which the New
Testament--as now known--was compiled. Whence, then, the Gospels, the life
of Jesus of Nazareth? Has it not been repeatedly stated that no human,
mortal brain could have invented the life of the Jewish Reformer, followed
by the awful drama on Calvary?
We say, on the authority of the ESOTERIC EASTERN SCHOOL, that all this came
from the GNOSTICS, as far as the name Christos and the astronomico-mystical
allegories are concerned, and from the writings of the ancient Tanaim as
regards the Kabalistic connection of Jesus or Joshua, with the Biblical
personifications.
One of these is the mystic esoteric name of Jehovah--not the present
fanciful God of the profane Jews ignorant of their own mysteries, the God
accepted by the still more ignorant Christians--but the compound Jehovah of
the pagan Initiation. This is proven very plainly by the glyphs or mystic
combinations of various signs which have survived to this day in the Roman
Catholic hieroglyphics.
The Gnostic Records contained the epitome of the CHIEF SCENES ENACTED DURING
THE MYSTERIES OF INITIATION, SINCE THE MEMORY OF MAN; though even that was
given out invariably under the garb of semi-allegory, whenever entrusted to
parchment or paper. But the ancient Tanaim, the Initiates from whom the
wisdom of the Kabala (oral tradition) was obtained by the later Talmudists,
had in their possession the secrets of the mystery language, and it is in

number comes forth to teach the masses, and is handed down to tradition as

rest, to give to the masses before the time, moved by a great pity, and

the lives of all Initiates. Once I was in a great cave-temple in the
Himalaya mountains, with my Master," and she looked at the picture of the

of them, he said: 'This is he whom you call Jesus. We count him to be one
of the greatest among us.” "But that is not the only work of the adepts.
At much shorter periods, they send forth a messenger to try to teach the
world. Such a period comes in the last quarter of each century, and the
Theosophical Society represents their work for this epoch."

ONE UNIVERSAL ANTIQUE RELIGION
"We can assert, with entire plausibility, that there is not one of all these
sects--Kabalism, Judaism, and our present Christianity included-- but sprung
from the two main branches of that one mother-trunk, the once universal
religion, which antedated the Vedic ages--we speak of that PREHISTORIC
BUDDHISM WHICH MERGED LATER INTO BRAHMANISM.
The religion which the primitive teaching of the early few apostles most
resembled--a religion preached by Jesus himself--is the elder of these two,
Buddhism. The latter as taught in its primitive purity, and carried to
perfection by the last of the Buddhas, Gautama, based its moral ethics on

1, everything existing, exists from natural causes;

JESUS TAUGHT
"...the followers of Jesus evidently adhered to a sect which became a still
more exasperating thorn...It appeared as a heresy within another heresy;
for while the nazars of the olden time...were Chaldean kabalists, the adepts
of the new dissenting sect showed themselves reformers and innovators from
the first...
The Essenes...were the converts of Buddhist missionaries who had overrun
Egypt, Greece, and even Jude at one time, since the reign of Asoka the
zealous propagandist; and while it is evidently to the Essenes that belongs
the honor of having had the Nazarene reformer, Jesus, as a pupil, still the
latter is found disagreeing with his early teachers on several questions of
formal observance. He cannot strictly be called an Essene...neither was he
a nazar, or Nazaria of the older sect...He is the founder of the sect of the
new nazars, and...a follower of the Buddhist doctrine...what is self-evident
is that he preached the philosophy of Buddha-Sakyamuni. Denounced by the
later prophets, cursed by the Sanhedrin, the nazars--they were confounded
with others of that name...they were secretly, if not openly persecuted by
the orthodox synagogue. It becomes clear why Jesus was treated with such

HUMANITY AT LARGE BY PRODUCING A RELIGIOUS REFORM WHICH SHOULD GIVE IT A

sons of my house," i.e. of my doctrine. And, if we understand it rightly,
we cannot avoid thinking that this "secret" doctrine of Jesus, even the
technical expressions of which are but so many duplications of the Gnostic
and Neo-platonic mystic phraseology --that this doctrine, we say, was based
on the same transcendental philosophy of the Oriental Gnosis as the rest of
the religions of those and earliest days. That none of the later Christian
sects, despite their boasting, were the inheritors of it, is evident from
the contradictions, blunders, and clumsy repatching of the mistakes of every

Yes, Yes, Yes!!! I am much interested in this subject.
However you did not answer me on the reincarnation of Jesus. Will this
happen? I've often heard that Jesus would return once more, but I never
heard that he would be actually "reborn" and grow from childhood to manhood
yet again. I've looked in the bible but really find no mention of this. Is
there another place that one can look for this answer?

Dear Cindy:
Your question seems to revolve about the "joining" of a group for personal,
fraternal or what might be called "social reasons." You ask if I have had
experience in this area.
Regarding the Bahais. It has been my privilege to know a few of very high
moral quality. I also respect their statement of ideals and their attempt
to stabilize their people - to give them a reasonable, and possibly, a
spiritual alternative to the paradoxes, rigidities of fear and ignorance
that Islamic "religious authority" has imposed.
That being said, does not endorse the "Bahai faith." It however recognizes
that there are Bahais of high and noble quality - some occupying high
positions in their organization, and others being humble and almost
unnoticed. It was started in a particular area (Iran - Land of the Nobles)
to meet the needs of a people there who were dissatisfied with the
immoralities that the common religion and social structure had fallen into -
and which still persist.
Every 'popular' religion in the world today is based on ignorance and fear.
THEOSOPHY alone stands out as a revealer of meaning in the ancient virtues
and moral codes -- and therefore it is hated and feared by religionists of
all kinds.
Religion has become a great money and power earner. To expose the basis of
idealism as a universal fact all can access, destroys such conditions. It is
therefore to be suppressed.
It is interesting to see (reviewing history) that every socio-religious
reform starts with one, or a few individuals, who put into practice as
persons a universally known and recognized philosophy of honesty of conduct
in all their affairs, private and public. [See ISIS UNVEILED II 537 as an
instance of this ]
This brings them sooner or later into conflict with dishonesty in
government, religion, and other social affairs, where we find (even today)
that well-known, high moral professions are violated by selfish interests,
and dishonest officials who pretend to have (or actually miss-wield)
"authority."
But no "organization" can ever be truly valued today, or any time, by
scattered opinions or by sentiment. It is important to find out (1) why it
was started ?, (2) what it was intended to do ? , (3) is that still its
objective, (4) do selfless honest people still work in and through it for
others' benefit ? .. is it tolerant of parallel groups with similar
objectives and ideals -- and so on ?
First: What have you drawn from it in terms of ideals and practises ?
Second: How do they appeal to you, (or the reverse) and why ?
It is not a good idea (for any of us) to offer opinions concerning various
groups and efforts to spiritualize our living, either individually, or
collectively. No one ever totally fits into the frame-work of an ideal set
of practises because so much of every human life is hidden from other's
view. And also we are all aspiring to elevate our own capacity to adhere in
daily life to our chosen IDEALS.
So criticism (or either groups or individuals) is useless, and the
assistance of every well-intentioned individual who sacrifices their time
and efforts to ASSIST (not to guide or dominate) others ought to receive
welcome providing it is intended to assist humanity at large and
impersonally towards an honest and well-regulated personal life. Most groups
seem to develop "policemen" who try to scrutinize how the rest of the
"members" are doing in their supposed devotions to that particular group.
That of course brings everything to a grinding stop sooner or later. Then a
fresh reform starts somewhere.
This does not mean one has to embrace any sect or religion - as most, by
now, have become rigid and opinionated - and being right or wrong is a
matter of purely external scrutiny by individuals (or a group of such) who
themselves show signs of being incapable of impartiality or tolerance.
But sometimes on finds that "political" or "practical" concessions may be
required of us in order to secure some advantages in employment, etc. Is
such a condition just? Is it something that can be endured? Ought we to
endorse such a situation by agreeing to it ? These are all "test-questions"
along the span of human existence covering MANY LIVES we are engaged in.
It is important to realize we are IMMORTAL EGOS who are deathless. We are
however living and working through the vast collectivity of Nature (the
entire Universe, as well as our own physical bodies) as a Monad that can
become entirely a spiritual force, powerful for good only. This is the ideal
goal that THEOSOPHY holds out for us all to see and decide about in regard
to ourselves and our lives. HPB in making THEOSOPHY available, stresses
this point again and again. [ In other words, each Monad (the "We --
PERCEIVER" within) is in essence a "Jesus." Startling? See S D II 167.
We need to liberate this immortal SPIRITUAL inner power from the bonds of
our personal selfish selves -- our "LOWER MIND" -- and that lives only this
one short life, while the immortal SELF, the ATMA, goes on forever. ]
Suppose that you or I wanted [the correct word then is WILLED] to make of
ourselves musicians, artist-painters, scientists, economic or social
reformers, or historians, etc. we would have first to secure the language
that particular effort uses for communications.
We would have to look into history, and compare that with parallel
developments where there has been adequate history to demonstrate its
development -- through the actions and words of those who have "led" it
down the years..
Only the "inner person" knows absolutely and truly how their own
"spiritual" condition is. By this I mean their ability to live as closely
as they can to the outlines traced by the great common VIRTUES that you will
find every religion or faith ORIGINALLY OUTLINED.
As I see it, every religion (or sect, or creed) has come about as an
objective reform from older ones.

The KNOWERS ( Masters of Wisdom) declare it to be a permanent exposition of
the LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE and of our EARTH and HUMANITY - as a "Path of
Moderation towards a true spiritual personal life.
The Ideals are clearly defined. The application is inevitable in time, and
it is always in the hands of the individual students and applicants who
desire to make of their living a Theosophical test. Remember: THEOS =
godlike; SOPHIA = wisdom. WISDOM = laws, plans, equality and spiritual
excellence for each and all of the Monads in existence. The whole UNIVERSE
thrills with this effort and now we have each of us reached the MIND-STAGE,
where we can consider and think about such things.
Therefore, no one looking at another, ever sees more than a surface
appearance of what is going on in the MIND that is inside the body. That
surface view is no adequate basis for making decisions as to their character
and quality.
And, as we trace every new sect, creed or religion, one emerging from the
past wreck of good intentions [now having been made to degenerate - I mean,
being made rigid and criticizeable -- when the behaviour of individuals is
reviewed] we may see the same pattern or error reinstalling itself. How do
we break that pattern ?
"If Manu did not trace these words many thousands of years before the era
of Christianity, at least no voice in the whole world will dare deny them a
less antiquity than several centuries

If we turn to the Prâtimoksha Sûtra and other religious tracts of the
Buddhists, we read the ten following commandments:
1. Thou shalt not kill any living creature.
2. Thou shalt not steal.
3. Thou shalt not break thy vow of chastity.
4. Thou shalt not lie.
5. Thou shalt not betray the secrets of others.
6. Thou shalt not wish for the death of thy enemies.
7. Thou shalt not desire the wealth of others.
8. Thou shalt not pronounce injurious and foul words.
9. Thou shalt not indulge in luxury (sleep on soft beds or be lazy).
10. Thou shalt not accept gold or silver.*
"Good master, what shall I do that I may have eternal life?" asks a man
of Jesus. "Keep the commandments." "Which?" "Thou shalt do no murder,
Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear
false witness," is the answer.
"What shall I do to obtain possession of Bhodi? (knowledge of eternal
truth)" asks a disciple of his Buddhist master. "What way is there to
become an Upasaka?" "Keep the commandments." "What are they?" "Thou shalt
abstain all thy life from murder, theft, adultery, and lying," answers the
master.
Identical injunctions are they not? Divine injunctions, the living up to
which would purify and exalt humanity. But are they more divine when
uttered through one mouth than another? If it is god-like to return good
for evil, does the enunciation of the precept by a Nazarene give it any
greater force than its enunciation by an Indian, or Thibetan philosopher?
We see that the Golden Rule was not original with Jesus; that its
birth-place was India. Do what we may, we cannot deny Sakya-Muni Buddha a
less remote antiquity than several centuries before the birth of Jesus. "

I do hope this finds you in good health and spirits. I do have a question
and am hoping you can help me to find the answer.
What is the Bahai faith? I've heard several people saying that this person
is Jesus reincarnated. I can't believe this to be true, but I can be
wrong. World religion? He will usher in global peace? Please anything you
know would be of extreme help.
