The naming convention used in the western world seems to come from Roman
custom. In India, the first name is your dad's given name and the last name
is your given name. In India, For example, N Sriram comes from Nilakanta
Sastry (N) and Sriram is the given name. With this convention each brother
will have a different last name per western custom. In many cases, men and
women have only one name; given name. When British came to India, they
wanted every one to have two names. Hope this explains.
