Thanks for this info.  I can suggest at least two more examples where 
a religious organization quickly changed for the better.  First, 
after Elijah Muhammad died, his son had the courage and conscience to 
reject the most fantastic and hateful aspects of the father's 
teachings and move the former Nation of Islam back more to the 
mainstream:

(Which then inspired the true believers to secede and form their own 
NOI group now led by Farrakhan.)  Another case is the Community of 
Christ, formerly the Reorganized LDS Church:

While they don't reject Joseph Smith entirely, they accept criticism 
of the Book of Mormon as a 19th century production, something still 
anathema in the Utah church.  And have generally moved away from the 
more problematic aspects of Mormonism.
