Dear Gerry:
RE: esotericism and exotericism
I don't know how to answer you, as our individual concepts agree, but
expressions of them do not coincide. Words seem to be barriers to our common
ideas.
I said once before (was it to Mauri ?) that anything expressed ceased to be
esoteric.
The whole Universe (as I see it) is based on the polar opposite of Maya.
UNITY.
The dual Monad in manifestation is conjoined SPIRIT-MATTER.
And yet it is also three-fold, since it needs an independent MIND to
perceive them. I conclude (to myself) that the "Path" and the "Assembly"
(sangham) leads to the BUDDHAS [Those who are WISE in spiritual things] .
As you often say, all is Maya, yet anyone immersed in that highly confused
set of states knows that basically there are rules regulations and laws that
combine to hold all together. How is this certain knowledge so definite?
[And if one says: "It is indefinite," where, and how does such certainty
arise? ]
Starting with ISIS UNVEILED, the Masters through HPB, try to place some of
the basics before us all to consider. They teach HISTORY as They have seen
it recorded and presently available in the Akasa (as I understand it).
If the exoteric is "confusion," then the esoteric is: "simplicity."
If our present [exoteric] tendency is to analyse, the esoteric proclaims the
ONE.
It then presents the ways and methods of complex manifestation. {And adds
the "Path" to exit from that.}
It then indicates the "Path" to self-regulated control of the passionate,
emotional self as it seeks to reign over the "Lower Mind." Thus morals and
ethics strictly observed, and with no self-interest, could serve each one of
us as a simple, yet highly disciplined "path," to return to the ONE.
That is how I see it.
Dallas

Dal, you have posted several lengthy posts on this subject. I briefly
scanned them to see what "esotericism" is, and never found it. Some of your
quotes use the word, but none define it.
We all agree that when we put our thoughts into words, those words are
exoteric. HPB clearly says this, and so we all agree on it. But are
thoughts themselves "esoteric?" I think not. Nor are ideas, nor are
concepts. As I understand it, that which is esoteric is ineffable and that
is why when put into thoughts and words it is converted to the exoteric.
My own view is that "esoteric" refers to experiential. The taste of a peach
is esoteric. The view of a sunset is esoteric. The smell of a flower is
esoteric. The experience of nirvana is esoteric. Describing these
experiences in terms of concepts and then thoughts and then words is all
exoteric. I would say that in a broad sense, our observations are esoteric
and our interpretations are exoteric.
How do you define esoteric? I have yet to see a real definition in any of
your posts and am curious.
