I would say yes and no to your response. But I also think that the 
understanding of karma and the cycle of rebirth is somewhere working 
in the back of their non expectations as you say. There is something 
cultural about it all and spritual that goes deeper than simply not 
having watched it on TV or been attuned to higher expectations by 
seeing other people who have more.

I have often thought that this is what is behind the unrest in 
richer countries and behind most of the CRIME here too, they figure 
they can get it one way or another, mostly the other way...LOL

I just wrote an essay at theosophy talks truth about my neighbors 
and how bloggers and readers can be watchdogs. I may have to turn 
them in because I think they are dealing drugs right next door and 
under everyone's nose! They bought a house they could not afford and 
are a young couple. So, that is the flip side of the coin my friend.
