The American Headquarters in July of 1981. I was there.

It was actually very funny in some ways. He came with eight monks and the
little old ladies were quite upset to learn that he was not a vegetarian. In
fact the monks complained about the food, but were molified with told that
EVERYONE complained about the food at Olcott.

But the folks who were most disturbed were the Secret Service folks who took
one look at the Olcott estate grounds and realized that it was going to be a
security nightmare. They had to change the locks on the Theosphical Publishing
House building where the DL was going stay and the SS guards (I know it's a
bad pun) kept looking at the various wooded areas of the estate with great
concern. Before he spoke, he was greated by the Mayor of Wheaton, Illinois who
was clearly out of his element and did not quite know what to say.

The Chicago Tribune had a rather funny piece on it and included a picture of
one of the Olcottians with the topknot in his air going actually into what
would normally be the margin of the page.

All in all, it was a fascinating day, except that I got dragooned into
carrying a damned harp and nearly threw my back out.
