I think our earlier settlers didnt hold Queen Victoria in such high regard, but they all still loved mother england. Aussie way of saying that you guys, now, are the prisoners (financial) of mother england. Only just joking around.

Cass, the term fag comes from the English Public school when the Senior boys

fag. As for pohms was Prisoner of Her Majesty(Queen Victoria)

Dear John,
Although off topic, it would be interesting to know how the word fag for
cigarette came into usage. I know that in the UK/Australia, the use of
the word, fags, was commonly used for cigarettes. Do you want a fag, do
you have any fags etc? up until, probably 20 years ago, when the cigarette
companies made the cigarette a fashion item. We, even some to this day,
will call english people, "pome". I do know that this refers to
"prisoners of mother england", but is generally meant affectionately.
Regards
Cass

Actually John the guy in the Guiness records book has been hit by
lightning something like 6 or 9 times.
Thanks, it's been awhile since I read about it. Do you know any details
of even one of the strikes? Like was he standing on a somewhat insulated
surface, wearing trainers (as I recall, that's UK for tennis shoes),
etc???

UK English and American English: *Two people separated by a common
language*
Just think of all the ways that "smoking fags" can be translated
(anything from "killing people" to "having a cigarette"). Some younger
Americans on this list might not remember that years ago (my mother
still remembers it, and she's approaching 84) when fags in the USA were
still cigarettes, as they still are in the UK.)
