My understanding is that Galileo recanted rather than spend the end of his days in prison, or worse, death. This was the right moral choice under the circumstances. To do otherwise would have caused all his works to be destroyed with him, and thereby setting back the evolution of mankind, centuries. I was also told that HPB was Galileo in a past life. The resemblance in personality traits is remarkable between HPB and Galileo.

I've been reading this book today - and there are (thus far) several
interesting letter excerpts of Galileo's to various religious
persons/personages -

In one letter he notes that (to paraphrase) "we've known the
universe was Sun centered since 6 bc" - then he goes on to mention
Pythagoras, Plato, so on.

Also, it's sad to see mention that he was also a poet and a
playwrite whose works (in these areas) were burned. As were his
letters to his daughter (Maria Celeste) who was in the convent -
being the illeg. daughter of an affair, she was deemed unfit for
marriage and so "joining" the "veil" was pretty much one of the only
choices available to her.

I knew the church had threatened to kill him ifn he'd published
another book - which always suggested to me the possibility that
there was one BUT it's sad a bizarre to take a look at this
brilliant man's circumstance. Had he not published his works, they
would've been lost/burned and we wouldn't have them today -on the
other hand- by publishing them he suffered a nearly relentless
persecution. It's amazing to me, the morality of this man - to
stand in the face of such tragedy and knowingly chose his path, for
knowledge, for rights, for fact/truth, for a genuine benefit for
mankind AND at the self sacrafice of his own peace and prosperity.

The book characterizes him as a flamboyant conversationalist who
typically humorously illustrated his points.

Too bad, all the jokes probably got burned too.

(I think he's wonderful!)
