RE: Theos-World Re: Spamed?

One thing I have seen over the years is spam using other people's email
addresses. When someone gets spam, they assume it was send by the person
listed in the "from:" address in the email header. They respond to the spam
by replying to the message. Doing so, they don't reply to the actual sender
of the message, but rather to some innocent third party. The same is true of
email that is generated by viruses; it too often contains forged email
headers.

In order to prevent the spreading of viruses, the theos-talk mailing list
does not allow email attachments. Even so, I've occasionally seen messages
bounce back, claiming to be replies to spam or viruses send from the list.
I've also seen this with email addresses of friends and family, where they
get complaints about messages that they never sent out.

The best way to deal with both spam and viruses is to have one's anti-virus
program silently delete them whenever they arrive. They are not worth
replying to. They aren't even worth the bother of knowing of them when they
arrive. Simply knowing how many may arrive in a day can be an annoyance in
itself.
