Traditional Vatican turns to e-mail to announce pope's death

Saturday, April 2, 2005 Posted: 6:27 PM EST (2327 GMT)
VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican, steeped in centuries-old rituals and arcane traditions, turned to a distinctly modern tool to announce that Pope John Paul II had died: It sent an e-mail.

"The Holy Father, John Paul II, died at 9:37 p.m. (1937GMT) in his private apartment," the message read. "All procedures foreseen in the Apostolic Constitution `Universi Dominici Gregis' (`Of the Lord's Whole Flock'), promulgated by John Paul II on February 22, 1996, have been activated."

The use of such technology for such a historic announcement was unusual for an institution that still follows customs rooted in past centuries.
