Dear Cass,
Alexandria West is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to
promulgating Ancient Wisdom Traditions and their practical application
to the general public. The name is a reference to the ancient learning
center and great library in Alexandria, Egypt, and was suggested by
Victor Endersby (1891-1987), a very well known Theosophist in the ULT
tradition, author of The Hall of Magic Mirrors, and editor for twenty
years a magazine called Theosophical Notes. He was involved in the
early stages of establishing Alexandria West.
The aim of the organization is to make available ancient and
modern wisdom literature from all cultures and traditions for the
benefit of today's seekers of the perennial wisdom traditions. More
specifically, Alexandria West seeks to foster:
1. An awareness of the world's perennial wisdom traditions.
2. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
3. Respect for the inherent worth and dignity of every human being, and
the commitment to live by the principles of compassion, justice, and
wisdom in human relations.
To achieve these purposes, Alexandria West is committed to the
development of resources such as:
1. A library and special collections of original documents of historical
significance.
2. Teaching and Study Materials.
3. Study groups, workshops, seminars and field trips.
4. Publication of a quarterly journal and books dedicated to exploring
perennial wisdom traditions and their relevance to our lives today.
The organization is based in California, has a
Theosophical-Perennialistic library of some 15,000 items and special
collections of one-of-a-kind Theosophical documents of some 50,000
items. The organization publishes a quarterly journal called The
Serpaeum, each issue of which is about 40 pages and printed in color.
There are four study groups concurrently meeting and two day long
seminars per year.
A web site is in progress and should be up in a month or so.
