Dear Dr. Gregory
Very curious and interesting your e-mail, it is always very worth reading opinions from people who got into a deep research about a historical and valuable character, in this case, Charles W Leadbeater.
It is really worth of notice how people easily create absurd legends about a simple incident, linking facts to aburdities. The stomach bug probably from the water quality in India.
Friends of mine when went to India always brought along a packet full of antibiothics and other emergencial medicines...
Is the book "The Elder Brother" a biographical or a critical work?
Seems very interesting the contents of the book.
I am back to the free translation into Portuguese from The Ocean of theosophy " by WQJ and in my first days of theosophical reading ( since 5-6 years ago) I began with the books of Leadbeater, which, inspite of those related incidents, showed me the direction of the path that brought the Theosophy from the masters by the pen of HPB.
Feel always free to show us the circumstances and curiosities about the jorney that culminated in the book.
With kind regards
Krishtar

Subject: Theos-World Verified clairvoyance!
Amongst the Theosophical claimants to clairvoyant powers, the only one of
whom I have personal experience - and whose "findings" on at least one
matter was completely persuasive to me - was Dora Kunz.
When I concluded my research at Adyar, John Coats was eager to have me
stay longer. I had a flight booked to Australia, my accommodation in
Leadbeater Chambers had run out (a convention was about to begin), and my
funds were exhausted. Not to mention that I needed to get back home to
spend Christmas with my family.
John was insistent that I stay, and, when pressed, explained that he
wanted me to stay until Dora Kunz arrived in Adyar. He took me into the
President's residence, accommodated and supported me, arranged a change
of flight, organized the manager of the bank on the Adyar Estate to get
me some money..... While I was happy to interview Mrs Kunz, it all seemed
rather excessive.
I raised this with John's secretary, who finally disclosed that John
wanted Mrs Kunz to check me out clairvoyantly. Apparently my aura or
whatever met the challenge. Mrs Kunz was charming, friendly and told me
what she could about her time with Leadbeater. Obviously, she was a very
accurate clairvoyant!!
John, alas, had a heart attack while I was staying with him, was rushed
to hospital, and, shortly after I left Adyar, died. Amazing stories were
circulating at Adyar about the cause of his heart attack - the most
extraordinary was that Radha Burnier (head of the ES) had stolen HPB's
"occult ring" and used it in "black magic" to cause John's collapse. Some
readers may know that stories about the HPB ring are many and diverse,
but this is the oddest allegation I have ever heard. It was also alleged
that the stomach bug that afflicted me after John was taken to hospital
had the same origin. I prefer a more boring explanation.
