Sure I agree with you on that Anand.
They came as far as I know first with the numbers and information in a sort of complete form.
So the books historical value, should not be overlooked.

But, what about this one:
1. The Theosophical Society and Its Future
http://www.theos-world.com/archives/html/tw199706.html#ARTICLE0097

2. HPB on the importance of distribution of elementary litterature

"Here in England Theosophy is waking into new life. The slanders and absurd inventions of the Society for Psychical Research have almost paralyzed it, though only for a very short time, and the example of America has stirred the English Theosophists into renewed activity. "LUCIFER" sounded the reveille, and the first fruit has been the founding of the "Theosophical Publication Society." This Society is of great importance. It has undertaken the very necessary work of breaking down the barrier of prejudice and ignorance which has formed so great an impediment to the spread of Theosophy. It will act as a recruiting agency for the Society by the wide distribution of elementary literature on the subject, among those who are in any way prepared to give ear to it. The correspondence already received shows that it is creating an interest in the subject, and proves that in every large town in England there exist quite enough isolated Theosophists to form groups or Lodges under charter from the Society. But, at present, these students do not even know of each other's existence, and many of them have never heard of the Theosophical Society until now. I am thoroughly satisfied of the great utility of this new Society, composed as it is to a large extent of members of the Theosophical Society, and being under the control of prominent Theosophists, such as you, my dear Brother W. Q. Judge, Mabel Collins, and the Countess Wachtmeister. "

A few comments:

BUT, what kind of elementary litterature aught one to recommend? - And recommend even today?
Is it Occult Chemistry based on an author named C. W. Leadbeater with a reputation, which screams to the higher powers for help?
No. I disagree.

I understand that the book Occult Chemistry is an important piece of work - if it was created clairvoyantly.
Something I agree upon to a certain extend. But its target group was clearly not science. And this is very important.
Because if its target group was science it is clearly showing lack of content and methodology compared with a given timframe and science back in those days.

It is true how ever:
The beginner theosophists wants fuss, fancies and drama. And with Leadbeater they certianly will get it. >:-)
But, it is today becomming a real problem, that beginner theosophists is CLEARLY being lead to believe that this
C. W. Leadbeater was a great pal - 'one of our own' a true initiate, who almost needs to be praised to the sky for his activities -
WHEN the beginner theosophists later gets backstabbed with his sex-scandals and what not.

But if they like backstabbing at TS Adyar, that is what the Law of Karma will take care of.
Do we need such kind of glamour, popery, pomp and circumstance?

I raise my voice in protest against such a policy in TS Adyar.
(It is romoured, that HPB rotates in her grave, where someone recently has placed the book Occult Chemistry.)

But is is maybe all of it a question about - 'chemistry'.

Scentific instruments are not able to see structure of atom to
details which clairvoyance enables to see. And scientist can
officially accept only that which can be proved. As that kind of
clairvoyance is rare and it is not possible to prove by ordinary
means which scientists use, they might find it difficult to accept or
reject Occult Chemistry. However it appers that they are giving
serious thought to Occult Chemistry.
