"A Great Occultist"

Mr Gholap draws attention to the booklet: "C.W. Leadbeater. A Great
Occultist" produced byu some of Leadbeater's later disciples in response
to E.L. Gardner's "There is no religion higher than truth" (1963).

The booklet contains little of any interest. Two of those who contributed
to the "defence" of their mentor were Dick Balfour Clarke and Harold
Morton. In later years, Morton wrote to Clarke (I have a copy of the
letter) ridiculing both of them for believing in Leadbeater's
"revelations". Clarke agreed but, until I interviewed him at Adyar, kept
his views to himself.

It should be noted that E.L. Gardner produced a series of private papers
on Leadbeater, several focussing on Leadbeater's sexual activities and
the occult reasons behind and explanations for them. These have never
been published (indeed, Gardner did not wish them to be published), but
drew on evidence given to Gardner by contemporaries of Leadbeater.
