Leadbeater arrived in Australia in 1914, was denounced to the Sydney
judicial authorities in 1917 and investigated. The theosophists were
seen as a weird bunch by many Australians at that time, particularly
by the press. Remember: the Order of the Star was still in existence
and theosophists were regarded as followers of the Messiah
(Krishnamurti).
When some TS members donated money for the construction of the
Balmoral Amphitheatre, a Sydney journalist published a piece in
which he said that Krishnamurti would enter Sydney harbour walking
on the water to address the theosophists assembled at the
amphitheatre. This story has been published in the Australian press
from time to time, AND WAS TREATED AS A FACT BY SOME, in spite of
attempts to rectify it by showing that the Balmoral Amphitheatre was
intended as a cultural centre for lectures and art perfomances.
A weird and laughable bunch of people (in the view of many,
including journalists), lead by a perceived suspicious man, causing
judicial authorities to be fainthearted and fearful? It looks like
an incredible story.
