I once knew this experiment in another form, a psychic friend taught me a variation of your experience.
He told me that if we keep a water fast for hours and quite before the bedtime ( he insisted that it must be not when you are feeling speepy 'cause if you fall asleep you'll not remember anything later) we put a tiny portion of salt on the tongue and before going to bed you live a glass of water a few steps from the bed, after relaxation it is easier to project the astral body.
Did you try it later?
I read once that when we wake up in the astral, all the surroundings seems to be illuminated by a yellowish light and all things look as if seen through a mirror ( inverted).
There is a big institute in Brazil called IIPC which concentrates tons of books and courses on Projeciology.
I gess I still do not have the nerve to do it, I am still scared of the inhabitants and their influences of this plane when this particular Siddhi wakes up in us....

PROJECTION OF ASTRAL BODY- I

It was in the year l961, I was a student of B.Sc. II year. I 
was found of a cultural magazine, "Bharati" published by Bharatiya Vidya 
Bhawan, Bombay.( present Mumbai) and edited by the renowned figure Shri 
Kanhaia Lal Munshi. I came across an article named, "PAR KAYA PRAVESH".
The article described a method to project one's astral body.

According to the method, I kept a fast on a day. I ate nothing. 
Even water was not taken. At night, I placed water filled pot on a table 
before my bed. While looking at the pot, I tried to sleep. What I observed? 
Few glowing white lines came out of my body and reached the pot. What 
happened after-wards? I do not remember.

Probably, it was my first experiment with my astral body. It 
was an important turning point in my spiritual life.
