Considering the obvious senility of some of them that is perfectly
understandable. Age is a difficult thing to face, the knowledge that you no longer can
jump off of balconies and do other feats of daring without the serious
possibility of breaking something important. The same is true of religions. It must
be a terrible thing to see oneself as the only remaining bearer of light in a
world of encroaching darkness.

Perhaps that is why we are constantly bombarded by old ideas by querulous old
people who have nothing better to do with the remaining years of their lives
than to try to defame people like you who actually do good work.

I've always rather liked the old Frank Sinatra song, "It was a very good
year." And perhaps it is best to look on the grand old days of Theosophy in that
way, fading into the sunset, taking pride in the accomplishments, cringing at
the embarrassments but knowing that the day is ending, if it has not ended
already and that the new Theosophy will be something the founders could not
recognize if they tried, any more than they could figure out the inner workings of
a plasma television screen, but it will also be good once it is freed from the
superstitions of its past.
