"The Master" vs. your "higher self"

Hey,
I see an ambiguity or perhaps a conflict between different advice presented in the sources cited by Daniel, one of which juxtaposes a real Master vs. one's higher self. Seems to me a very dangerous thing to focus one's meditation on any specific Master as opposed to the universal consciousness or higher self. One can become obsessed with entities real or imaginary, as Cayce warns and as Steve and Perry have described. Eckankar is a vivid example of people falling in love with imaginary Masters; I have heard that the Esoteric Section of the Adyar TS likewise promotes such obsessions.
Does Theosophy, like Cayce and unlike Radhasoami, warn people to steer clear of specific entities in their meditation practice? That depends on which text one cites.
