I donīt think they didnīt succeed.
They cannot change the human nature which is learn from their own faults.Life after life.
There is no collective salvation to Man.
Salvation - sublimation from our present state of conscience - can only be individual.
IMO, they would not help mankind doing themselves what must be done by ourselves.
We can help others showing good paths, giving ourselves as examples, but wecannot make them believe and change their mind.
Paramahansa Yogananda used to say " we can point a river to a horse but we cannot have him drink the water."  
The recipe, Erica, IMHO, independent of time and space, will always be Loveand our rendition to God. The rest comes as consequence.

Who can give recipes for love and compassion to born in the human 
heart? Buddha, Jesus did not succeed, would empty words with 
techniques be enough? Experience alone is the best teacher.
