Dear Friend:

If there is such an urge (to FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE) that is fundamental
to all beings, surely it springs from the "Ray of the Spirit" innate at the
core of every MONAD whatever its current position / condition of
intelligence or consciousness may be. It is "atomic" and indestructible as
all atoms are.

What is self-guidance but the refection at however low a level of the
UNIFIED SPIRIT of ALL? The limits of any form seem to create a veil in
which perception at that level stops or finds it difficult to penetrate.
Comes the period when the MONAD in its eternal pilgrimage attains the mind
state of individual / personal intelligence.

We then find ourselves (as independent, questing MINDS) in a paradox: the
mind that is ours appears to be split: 1/2 is attracted to IDEALS; and the
other 1/2 is enmeshed in selfish desires, passions, emotions -- which, on
analysis do not have any extension or benefit beyond the death of that
"form." But the spiritual side has that kind of extension, and HPB explains
this at great length in The KEY TO THEOSOPHY

In Theosophy we are reviewing history. Some will disagree because of the
limitations encountered in the "West" by R C Church doctrines, and the
limited interpretation of Jewish chronology (old Testament) that limits the
"creation" of the Earth to under 5,000 years.

Further, the speculative nature of reconstructing an antiquity partially
based on geology and scattered fossils, and partially based on orthodox
teachings now embedded in Science as to man's intellectual and sensory
nature being altered by the forms (a few skeletons, carefully selected) he
has used -- (and a woeful lack of understanding of reincarnation and the
spiritual side of man's existence) all these combine to confuse.

If THEOSOPHY is true, we have an account by eye-witnesses of the
re-commencement of the Earth -- as a school on which eternal Pupils (MONADS)
which, like the "atoms," are present everywhere, and are, in fact the basic
intelligences of Nature. These are the centre and core of all evolution --
which is not partial to man alone, but encompasses, justly, and impartially,
uniformly and pervasively, everything in its ambit.

The record made by endless students who have tested and verified the laws of
nature -- over an immense period of time -[ S D I 272-3] - not the paltry
300 years of "Western Science" and its juvenile speculations.

For this reason HPB says

"The philosophy of that law in Nature, which implants in man as well as in
every beast a passionate, inherent, and instinctive desire for freedom and
self-guidance, pertains to psychology and cannot be touched on now. To
show the feeling in higher Intelligences, to analyse and give a natural
reason for it, would necessitate, moreover, an endless philosophical
explanation for which there is no room here." (SECRET DOCTRINE ii 484)"

Law is LAW and impersonal, universal and active everywhere. Atoms and "life
atoms" (Monads) are everywhere. Laws are uniform for all according to the
level of intelligence they manifest or have attained. Humans are
Mind-Monads -- "life atoms" whose inherent independence and STABILITY is
incontrovertible.

I see in the SECRET DOCTRINE precisely an attempt to make the logic of
universal evolution plain.

It exposes personal selfish desire as the main culprit for our sorrows and
woes -- it encourages study and learning, and because any kind of proof has
to be done independently by each student, improvement in relations using the
ideal of BROTHERHOOD as a "Flag" is used to signal the need for
"passionate, inherent, and instinctive desire for freedom and
self-guidance."

It is there and cannot be eradicated by any means, such as threat, tyranny
of mind, claims of superior knowledge and "leadership," "faith and blind
belief," etc.... or of dispossession of property, etc...

Best wishes,

Dallas

There is a typo error below. Where it says "and endless philosophical
explanation" it should read "an endless philosophical explanation".
