Re: Theos-World Inquiry concerning Einstein's copy of SD at Princeton University Library

Daniel, these are not reports. Rather, it is just one of many often repeated apocryphal stories that come up again and again in TS circles. This one has been circulating for decades that I know of. It usually goes something like: "There is at Princeton University a very worn copy of the Secret Doctrine that is said to have been Einstein's personal copy." We have lots and lots of these stories in TS circles, and when checked out, they always seem to lead to dead ends, and continue to be repeated anyway. I never heard of anyone bothering to check this one out, and figured (as you demonstrated) it would relatively easy to do. The only (in my opinion) credible first hand witness to an Einstein-Theosophy connection whom I have ever met was Dr. Taylor. I am also aware of the late Eunice Layton's story about "Einstein's niece" visiting Adyar, and figured that there is probably something to it. However, based upon other experiences I have had with her, I personally did not consider Mrs. Layton a particularly credible source for accurate information about anything. --jhe

Although there are at least two different editions of HPB's SD
in the Princeton University Library, an initial inquiry
turns up nothing that would indicate that any of these
editions belonged to Einstein. Another search is being
undertaken at PUL but at this point I think this is a
blind alley.

Jerry, can you tell us more about these reports you had
indicating that Einstein's copy of the SD was at this library?
Had the persons seen the copy or just what?

Daniel
