There are 4 books I think all Theosophical students should read.
One may not agee with all that is written in these 4 books but
one needs to be knowledgeable about the subject matter in
these books.
The four books are:
Madame Blavatsky: The Woman Behind the Myth
by Marion Meade
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0595151876/
The Masters Revealed: Madame Blavatsky and the
Myth of the Great White Lodge
By K. Paul Johnson
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0791420647/
The Elder Brother: A Biography Of Charles Webster Leadbeater
by Gregory Tillett
http://www.wisdomtraditions.com/PLPCatFr.html
The Making of a Spiritual Movement : The Untold Story of
Paul Twitchell and Eckankar
by David Christopher Lane
Out of print but on the web at:

Also in light of HPB's quote below, one should also
try to understand "the other side":
"...Contrast alone can enable us to appreciate things at
their right value; and unless a judge compares notes and
hears both sides he can hardly come to a correct decision."
H.P. Blavatsky. The Theosophist, July, 1881, p. 2
