Actuall it comes from before then, in the days of slow walking and
slow talking, when people dies of boredom waiting for people to say
anything and then died of disappointment when they did say something
and it was apparent they STILL had not said anything. The fact that
this state of affairs still continues on other chat lists (but not
this one) is not a coincidence.
As for the real meaning of ROFL, I heard it from a sailor years ago,
but he was so embarrassed he had to wait until there were no other
sailors around to communicate it. He had no problem cursing like a
sailor, but ROFL - well, now, that was just too much. Even the
initials of ROFL are just positively ROFL IMO IYKWIM.
