vimanas and theosophy?

Dear all,

A question: in The Secret Doctrine, Mme. Blavatsky mentions "balloons and the agni rath, the powerful Mash-mak etc." Scott-Elliot of course refers to the flying vessels of Atlantis. What I need to know is:

How and where did Blavatsky derive the idea that the ancient Indian culture had flying vessels (vimanas), what was her source, and do we have any documentation as to how and where (perhaps India) Blavatsky came into contact with this idea or notion or tradition? And was it perhaps the tradition of the vimanas that she came into contact with? If not, are there any indications as to how she developed the idea of flying vessels?

Any bibliographical data are most welcome!

Kind regards,

Theo Paijmans
