K's selection was one of the success stories one needs to give credit to 
CWL. After all K turned out well. He did affect a large number of people 
around the world during his life time. His writings seem to be received 
well as evidenced by how many of them are on the bookshelves of major book 
stores compared to all the theosophical authors. Also, after he started 
public speaking, there were, IMHO, no competition from leaders of 
theosophical organizations.
