Dear M and Friends:

You ask:

"If wisdom is beyond thought then what is spiritual thought
referred here?"

Let me offer for you to consider that which Theosophy has
taught, and which I think I understand from it...

One might answer briefly and say : The SPIRITUAL THINKER is
always beyond the personal thinking brain-mind. -- our
"personality." In such a case I might say: this thinker is the
INDIVIDUALITY or BUDDHI-MANAS the "wise spiritual mind." But,
see some of what is below.

The personality (embodied mind, brain-mind) that we are, when we
are awake, is placed by our karma for review of decisions made
and actions taken, directly into the "Hall of Judgment". There it
is judged, by the "heart." (a synonym for our SPIRITUAL Higher
Self, or ATMA-BUDDHI).

In review of our daily thoughts and deeds, we might judge
ourselves by the standards which our personal self uses.

If our personality is pure and virtuous, by natural inclination,
or by aspiration, then the standard is high. If it is confused
or distorted by selfish desire, and desires to continue those,
then it is distorted to that extent, and inevitably it is
selfish, and will include aspects of viciousness. We are aware
of this, but we may elect to maintain those "comfortable" levels
of personal self-judgment that we have always used. We, however
have the inner power to get out of such a trap. Theosophy
teaches this and so does modern psychology.

One of the main problems we are faced with is, that in most
cases of modernity, we are unaware of the immortal nature of the
Monad which is our Real SELF (Atman). Our view then, is limited
to this life, and specially to such pleasures as we enjoy from
moment to moment -- usually, without a thought to the future
results of our choices. This is very dangerous to our
well-being. And also to other beings all around us, because we
continually act on them and affect them. These are of course the
Monads (Atma-Buddhi) of various levels of experience ( see S D
I 223-4, 629, 632, II 33-4, 42,

A second problem is that we are unaware of the intimate and
constant relation we have with all aspects of NATURE (the living
UNIVERSE). Our personality draws all its life (food, water, air,
rest, etc...) from that. This is where everything we choose, or
do, has a relation to Karma. We impose a moral quality on the
"little lives" (monads) that we continually use as our vehicles.
This moral quality then, in future, affects us for good or bad.

But let us use the "spiritual thought." It is not something
strange, for everyone is endowed with it on call. We might say
that WE (The Immortal SELF) are, judging the Lower Self (the
embodied mind) in the LIGHT of UNIVERSAL WISDOM, that streams
from the ATMAN, our HIGHER PERMANENT SELF. The Lower Self cannot
escape this scrutiny, even if it is unpleasant.

Mr. Judge in "LETTERS THAT HAVE HELPED ME " uses the symbology of
a glove, as representing that Lower Self. Some meditation about
that word and idea produce interesting results.

Also, Theosophy teaches [ see Key to Theosophy, pp. 91-2, 135-6,
195-6 ]: that every Human is made up of seven streams of
evolution that conjoin in us. These have been named
"principles." (see
S D I 157, 200, 242-6, and S D II 593, 596, 604,612, )

1. The Immortal Spiritual Man (or INDIVIDUALITY) is
ATMA-BUDDHI-MANAS (or PURITY, DISCERNMENT, THOUGHT)

2. Manas is the "principle" that bridges the gap between the
spiritual INDIVIDUAL and the EMBODIED mind in the "Personal Man."

3. Mind is therefore tripartite:

1. Buddhi-Manas (the WISE - Mind or "Higher Manas")

2. Pure Manas	(as in impartial, impersonal study, mathematics,
science, discovery, etc )

3. Kama-Manas (our present embodied mind or "Lower Manas").

It is important to always remember that in every case and for
each human being, it is ONE CONSCIOUSNESS which can operate at
will in 3 modes.

Will and free choice directs its field of work and effort. Will
is the creative tool, as also the Mind of the REAL MAN -- the
SPIRITUAL BEING WITHIN each of us.

"Space" in an abstract way is not dependent on objects. Our
Lower Mind is.

One might, from the point of view of material science, equate the
idea of stability, or "motionlessness," with extreme rapidity of
vibration -- a concept that explains "physical matter" as such
inter- and sub- atomic motion. Interesting.

So in reality, we are, and all "objects" and substances are,
"force fields when finally analyzed. Their source and cause is
not physical but metaphysical. Their source and origin is on an
entirely different plane where different laws operate.

If "immortality" in physical matter is impossible, (because of
constant change), then immortality in spiritual substance may
be. This ought to be considered. The laws and wisdom of that
spiritual plane can meld the power of choice with the results,
and we have KARMA -- a universal and impersonal active POWER that
treats all beings impartially, fairly, compassionately and
justly.

Just consider: as ideas are not physical, but are mental, and
use the "imagination " to draw pictures on "mental substance," so
our power to change the objectives of the personal man are
paramount.

But what originally established such relative rates if vibration
so that those distinctions might be set and operative ? What is
the "cause," or "source ?"

In such a case, what is it, and when was it that those "rates of
vibration" were established?

Isn't NATURE wonderful? Everything set up way ahead of time and
out of reach of our tampering.

It supports LIFE in all, so ... it is Karma, and the purpose,
as well as the result of Karma.

The universal urge of all evolution has only one object, and that
is to spiritualize all beings.

Our Science, in its investigations, is examining the tissued
framework of Nature and its imperative and continual laws of
relationship. Those are immutable. Nature established those. We
are only re-discovering them.

Now what are your thoughts? Hope mine are helpful.

Best wishes,

Dallas

3rd series SUBJECTS FOR DISCUSSION

THOUGHT

Action of the ego in a material vehicle. Different kinds of
thought, spiritual, intellectual, and animal. The last is little
more than desire. Presence of the lower manas in the human animal
causes the passions of the latter to be mixed with the mind and
to become vices. Difficulty of preventing the mind so mixing with
the ordinary animal nature. Should control it and not be
controlled by it. The mind discolored by whatever it focuses
itself upon. This is the so- called thought of most persons.
Difficulty of discovering a pure thought. Influences coming from
the presence of other people, from our training and education,
and from our desires to be avoided. The only correct thought is
that which comes from the spiritual being, the higher ego.
Patanjali's Yoga Aphorisms necessary for study. Few Theosophists,
any more than other people, consider the necessity for going into
their natures and discovering the true causes of their various
actions, endeavors and aspirations. Thought the most fleeting and
uncontrolled action of all. To hold it steady upon one object,
and that a spiritual one, the one in accord with the destiny of
the man, should be the endeavor.
