Open letter to Reed Carson, founder & moderator of BN-Study

by Daniel H. Caldwell

In a posting on BN-Study yesterday, Reed Carson, founder & moderator
of BN-Study, accused me of having a "personal vendetta against ULT"
as well as a "personal vendetta against Dallas."

Below is a partial reply to his accusation. He has refused to post
my reply on BN-Study so that readers might see the OTHER SIDE of the
issue.

Daniel

Dear Reed,

I'm curious. What prompted your "outburst" . . . [i.e. the comments
about my vendettas against ULT and Dallas]? Did my latest two
postings on BN-Study about the ULT and DES open a floodgate of pentup
emotions on your part?

As I see it, you and the other moderators are to be
"blamed" for allowing my "vendettas" (your word not
mine!) to appear on BN Study.

If you thought my postings were inappropriate, then
why did you allow them to be posted in the first
place?

As far as my alleged "vendettas" against ULT and
Dallas, didn't you forget to mention my OTHER
"vendettas" against Paul Johnson, C.W. Leadbeater,
Alice Bailey, Brigitte Muehlegger, etc.? :)

If I mistake not, you as well as many other ULT
associates including Dallas have thought highly of
some of those other "vendettas"! Yet when I use the
SAME critical method or ask some hard questions about
some of the practices of ULT/Theosophy Company or
some of the statements made by Dallas, you somehow
view those critiques DIFFERENTLY and label them
"vendettas". Hmmmm?

Your response actually reminds me of Paul Johnson's
response to my critique of his work. He first wrote
me saying he LOVED my razor-blade critique of Jean
Overton Fuller's biography of HPB and asked me to
critique his work, too. When I obliged and used the
SAME "razor blade" method on some of his statements,
he certainly didn't love it! I guess it hit too close
to home as they say. Maybe my critiques of UTL/TC and
statements of Dallas also hit you TOO CLOSE TO HOME.

What have I said in my critiques of ULT/TC and Dallas
that was incorrect, untrue or not factual? Please
cite details showing how I have distorted the
historical record of ULT or misrepresented some of
Dallas' views. True, I have asked hard questions and
pointed out things that possibly many ULTers don't
like to hear but . . . does that make me a person
engaged in some kind of "vendetta".

Have you ever thought about WHY I have brought up
these issues in the first place?

Furthermore, have my critiques been any more "hostile"
or challenging than, for example, the two ULT-produced histories
on the Theosophical Movement? Or the series of
articles titled AFTERMATH in THEOSOPHY magazine?

Many followers of Besant, Leadbeater, Tingley and others
have viewed those ULT histories as "vendettas" against
their teachers. If anything, I have simply used the
same critical method and asked the same kind of hard
questions to be found in the pages of those books on
ULT, Crosbie, DES, Modern Panarion, etc.

And if you have been reading the postings on, for
example, Theos-Talk, I have ALSO posted very
complimentary things about ULT/TC. And Wes Amerman
has thanked me from time to time for those comments.
If I was truly engaged in a "vendetta" then why would
I ever say a positive thing about ULT/TC?

I doubt that you will allow this posting to appear on
BN Study to show that there is ANOTHER SIDE other than
what you portray in your "vendetta" remarks but I
thought I should respond trying to at least get you to
think calmly thru the real issues.

Daniel
