Reprinted by Blavatsky Archives "Basic Ideas of Theosophy" by
Geoffrey A. Farthing

The following article has been excerpted from Geoffrey A. Farthing's
book Deity, Cosmos and Man, "The Scope and Framework of the Science,"
Part I, Chapter II, pp. 11-20. Mr. Farthing's book is an excellent
introduction to Theosophy as given in the writings of Madame H.P.
Blavatsky and her Adept Teachers. For more information on this book,
see Deity, Cosmos and Man.]

...
In this book, the order in which the various aspects of the subject
are approached is determined by the three principles which are
characteristic of the whole system. These are: the principle of
unity, the principle of law, and the principle of evolution. The
contents of the chapters in which the subjects are studied in greater
detail are briefly summarized in the numbered sections below.

1. The unity of all things

All existence is one thing. This one thing is variously called the
One Life, the One Reality; it is the source of Being, and of all
beings; it is in everything—in fact, it is everything, for there is
nothing else. ...

BA G > (Alpha) Ya, Ah, E, Es, Vas, Vish / Ush and As are Names of
Purusha or Vishnu (MW 227 passim). Like Sarveshvara, AUM and Brahman
etc. these Names of Krishna-Vishnu all indicate His Oneness or
Allness. Like A (Alpha) the number EKA 'ONE' is a primary Name of
Krishna-Vishnu. On Page 227 MW compares Zend ae-va, Greek oios,
Gothic ai-n-s and Latin aequu-s. The Sanskrit Name EKA for Hari-Vasu
should be compared to the Hebrew Deity Name ECHAD for ELI-YAHU. The
ancient worshipers of Krishna-Vishnu were called EKANTINS, because
they were worshipers of the ONE GOD. He alone was EKA NATHA, EKA
DEVA, EKATMA and simply EKA in litanies etc. His sacred number 11 in
Sanskrit was EKADASI and in Hebrew it was ECHADASAR. Of course the
famous late 18th Dynasty Egyptian Heliopolitan revivalist Akhenaten
worshiped the One God AKHE-NATEN and One Spirit AKHEN-ATEN / ATMAN.
See MW for Ekadeva The only God, Supreme Lord. MW 227-228 EKASRINGA
the Unicorn is a symbol of Vishnu, EKAHANSA 'ONLY DESTROYER OF
IGNORANCE' (a pun on Eka-Hamsa the One Swan), Supreme Soul 229,
EKANGA means One Bodied, that Vishnu is without parts. EKATMAN the
One Spirit is a Name of Vishnu, the unity of spiritual essence, the
doctrine of one universal spirit MW 230. In the Thousand Names of
Vishnu, many Names refer to His all-ness, one-ness and non-composite
nature. He is paradoxically One-and-different in the mysterious Unity
of his Godhead. Here are some other ancient Sanskrit Names of
Krishna-Vishnu with their Western and Judeo-Catholic cognates in
parenthesis (). Purnam (Plenum), Dhamane (Dominus), Huta (Gott,God),
Natha (Coptic Bibles Nouti, Egyptian NT, NTR), Krita Krita (Creator
of creators), Deva Deva (Deos of deos / God of gods), Brahman = AUM
(Amen, Amun, Aun / On [at Heliopolis], One, An, A, Only, Omni,
Uni...), Varta (Ward, Guard, Lord), Bhaga (Bhog, Slavic Bibles),
Atman (SELF Atum / Adon, Aten, Ontos, Autos, Atomos ...), Vasu Deva
(IS as BEING Yahu , Asu, Ousios / Osiris, Esse, Is ...), Vas / Bhas /
Fho (as LIGHT Phos), Vasu Deva (as Beneficent Eus of the Greeks).
Also Krishna-Vishnu is called Sunyata and Nirvana in the Mahabharata
Sahasranama (1000 Names), which is where the Buddhist doctrines of
emptiness come from.

BA G > Here HPB states her doctrine of the ONE BEING. This is
clearly NOT any Theravadin Buddhist teaching, and is even MORE
personal than the Mayavadi Avaita Vedantists.

"...let the mind hold fast, as a basis of its ideation to the
following ideas:

1. The fundamental unity of all existence...

Fundamentally, there Is ONE BEING.

This has two poles, positive and negative. The positive is Spirit, or
consciousness. The negative is substance, the subject of
consciousness.

BA G >This is an almost Gnostic-like dualism of good spirit and evil
matter.

This Being is the ABSOLUTE in its primary manifestation. Being
absolute, there is nothing outside of it. It is ALL BEING.

BA G >This positivism is completely un-Theravadin Buddhist.

It is indivisible, else it would not be absolute. If a portion could
be separated, that remaining could not be absolute, because there
would at once arise the question of comparison between it and the
separated part. Comparison is incompatible with any idea of
absoluteness. Therefore it is clear that this fundamental One
Existence, or absolute Being, must be the Reality in every form that
is...

The Atom, the Man, the God are each separately, as well as
collectively, Absolute Being in their last analysis, that is in their
individuality. It is this idea that must be held always in the
background of the mind to form the basis for every conception that
arises from study of the SD. The moment one lets it go...the idea of
separation supervenes, and the study loses its value." - HPB quoted
T A & N p. 272-3

BA G > The Vaishnava Vedanta assertion is similar, namely that there
IS differentiation
within the inconceivable ONE-NESS of the Persons of the Godhead, and
between the Godhead and the jiva-selves,
but this differentiation within the Absolute does not equate to the
separation problems
that arise in the maya of observable material other-ness.
Transcendent variegatedness
and personality is of an entirely different order than that of
material variety and otherness.
Variety and personhood in this mayavic realm is a reflection of real
variety and personhood in
the Absolute. However in the realm of Maha Maya (here) the illusion
of separation
predominates, whereas in the Param Dhama the Yoga Maya of communion
predominates.
This saha / suffering realm of variegatedness is a temporary
experience of birth, death, disease and old age,
but the Absolute realm of variegatedness is one of sat, chit and
ananda, ETERNAL BEING,
PERSONAL CONSCIOUSNESS and BLISS. "Gate Gate Param Gate" is a
Mahayana mantra which indicates
that we can go beyond, beyond to the Great Beyond.

2. There is no dead matter. Every last atom is alive...since every
atom is itself fundamentally Absolute Being...every atom of substance,
no matter of what plane...[is] a life.

BA G > The finite jivatmas and Infinite Paramatma (the 'Holy
Spirit') reside together throughout the material universes. The
jivatma is qualitively the same as Paramatma, but eternally finite.

3. Man is the microcosm...all the Hierarchies of the Heavens exist
within him. But in truth there is neither Macrocosm nor Microcosm but
One Existence.

BA G > This is the Vaishnava Vedanta doctrine of acintya-bhedabheda-
tattva, or the simultaneous inconceivable one-ness and difference of
the Absolute. This revelation related to Krishna-Vishnu's Third
Immanent Person Paramatma (The Holy Spirit) is described in the BVG,
for instance see BVG 13.17 "Although the Supersoul Appears to be
divided, He is never divided. He is situated as one."...

4. "As is the inner, so is the outer; as is the great, so is the
small; as it is above, so it is below; there is but One Life and
Law: and he that worketh it is One. Nothing is inner, nothing is
outer; nothing is great, nothing is small; nothing is high, nothing
is low, in the Divine Economy." HPB T. A. & N p. 272-3

BA G > This certainly seems to contradict the esotericism and elitism
of occultism in general and the Theosophical intrigue in specific.

2. Origins

The universe and all that is in it are subject to a timeless process
described as "Days and Nights," alternating periods of activity and
rest. According to the occult teaching, there is no creation, in the
sense of something being made out of nothing. There is indeed nothing
new under the sun.

"We believe in no creation, but in the periodical and consecutive
appearances of the universe from the subjective on to the objective
plane of being, at regular intervals of time, covering periods of
immense duration. (5)"

....

BA G > Like the teachings of the Jains, Theravadin Buddhists and
Advaitis, this theosophical teaching stops at the boundary of a
finite cosmos, and is concerned with its interior days and nights of
Brahma, Who is the Guna Avatara of Vishnu in the mode of Rajas, or
Creativity. Brahma is in some universes God Himself. In other
universes Brahma is a jivatma, and is not a true creator, because he
only organizes the stuff of the universe. In thought-systems where
there is no real Creator WHO CREATES OUT OF "NOTHING", there is no
creation. Lacking a Transcendental Creator, the Theosophical
Universe described above is only the finite cosmic manifestation of
an already created single universe, with its cycling days and nights
of Brahma. In the full Vaishnava Puranic picture, material universes
of immense duration are NOT eternal, as each universe has a CREATION,
duration (with the cycles Theosophy describes) and an ultimate end.
The Universes ARE created ex-nilo by Maha VIshnu, because they have
been imagined / created out of 'no-thing' by Maha Vishnu during His
Yoga Nidra. However, since God and His immaterial realm are
transcendentally existent, beyond the creation and death of a
universe, there is not an abyss or void of nothingness. Thus the
Advaiti, Theravadin Buddhist or Meister Eckhart type ideas of an
abyss of the godhead, or the question of something coming from
nothing is answered with the positive personalism of the
Transcendental Theism of the Vedas and Puranas. By the via negativa,
neti-neti or 'apophatic' process of reasoning and meditation, one can
only arrive at the negative apophatic notion of something having come
from a nothing or some kind of an 'abyss of the Godhead'. However,
it takes a divine revelation of positive personalism and the
transcendent realm of Being to get conceptually beyond the abyss /
void of the empty Universe (Hiranya Garbha bubble or egg) before
Shambhu 'impregnates' it with the potential of all things and life.
The atheists and pantheists, having no Transcendent God or Spiritual
Sky are limited in their 'theosophy' to T Buddhist questions of
dependent arising, inner and outer illusions, Advaiti speculations
about manas and buddhi and analysis of something-from-nothing
concepts via endless cycles or 'seasons' within a single infinite and
eternal material universe. Without any real concept of the
Transcendental, unable to conceive of anything or One beyond their
limited gross and subtle material categories and vision, the atheists
and pantheists are confined in their thought to the seemingly
causeless "periodical and consecutive appearances of the universe
from the subjective on to the objective plane of being,..."

BA G >However, the transcendentalists suffer from no such
confinement. Thus they can easily speak of the creation, endurance
and annihilation of this or infinite universes, and how a loving God
descends into each to sustain and ultimately save and return all
jivatmas from their sojourn is such finite saha-worlds to the
infinite Sat-Chit-Ananda Spiritual Sky. In the Great Bhakti
Traditions the highest Truth of Godhead's love and grace, which is
available for all jivatmas, is not an occult or secret doctrine
reserved for the understanding of an elite group of advanced jnanis.
It is poured-out on all humanity and God's messengers are sent with
its all-inclusive message of good news to all peoples, the young and
weak, the unprivileged and uneducated, the vastly-learned and wise,
saints and sinners, the mighty, the perfect, the sick and defective
and 'retarded' alike.

BA G >Theosophy without God posits the saint-like help of the
Mahatmas or those Beings of the Nirmanyakaya. But the Nirmanyakaya
or Sambhogya Kaya of the Bodhisattvas is not originally the last
station before annihilation in a void Dharmakaya ! Pure Land
Buddhism is at its core Krishna Centric Vaisnavism. Thus
the 'Original Body' of the Buddha as Dharma Kaya, in the oldest
sources throughout Pure Land Buddhism's range, is clearly Krishna
Murti. His Sambhogya Kaya Forms as Avalokiteshvara or Lokeshvara are
Vishnu Forms and Their Rupa Kaya as the all-pervasive Lord of the
Heart is HRIH. This is the authentic original Tradition and the
voidist teachings are a corruption of it. Restoring the positive
personalism of Pure Land Buddhism will be both a great reclamation
and a great advancement for humankind. Without devotion to HRIH /
Amitabha-Lokeshvara (Krishna-Vishnu) voidist 'Buddhism' will forever
remain a small-way school for self-loathing, life and world-rejecting
skeptics and cynics who can imaging nothing better than answering the
problem of suffering by annihilating the sufferers. In the
nonsensical world of the anatta voidists, everything is an illusion,
with no one, no self, no being to be illusioned. As with the Hindu
Mayavadis, altruism and love are really not any logical part of such
a person-less thought system. If there is no person who suffers, why
bother to address the issue of suffering in the first place ? Why
seek 'enlightenment' or perform acts of mercy ? Why is there Karma
if there is no Atma? What / who is corrected or improved by karma-
driven rebirth ? The non-sense explanations devised by the no-self
an-atmist Buddhists and illusory-self Mayavadi Hindus will always be
doctrines subscribed to by a comparatively few esotericists and elite
occultists who cannot stand to associate themselves with the
spiritual common folk who have mere common sense. The T Buddhists,
Mayavadis and Theosophists all have thought systems which lack a
reasonable concept of origin for WHAT IS.

BA G >For the Theosophists the cosmos IS periodically, but has no
origin. For the T Buddhists IT ISN'T, so there is no question of an
origin. For the Mayavadis the absolute IS, but being devoid of any
variety, qualities or personality, it is only an energy-like SAT, not
Chit or Ananda, and is without beginning or end, such concepts being
only part of the maya or illusion of self-consciousness.

3. The sevenfold nature of Cosmos and man

One of the esoteric keys to the understanding of life is analogy, as
given in the Hermetic axiom, "As above, so below." The universe is
the macrocosm, the great ordered whole, and man is its miniature
reflection, the microcosm.

...

"Every form on earth and every speck (atom) in Space strives in its
efforts towards self-formation to follow the model placed for it in
the "Heavenly Man"...Its [atom's] involution and evolution, its
external and internal growth and development, have all one and the
same object--man; man is the highest physical and ultimate form on
this earth; the MONAD in the absolute totality and awakened
condition--as the culmination of the divine incarnations on Earth."
S D I 183

BA G >I have described the relationship of God as Purusha to man as
purusha in detail elsewhere. Regarding the sevenfold doctrine in
Western Esoterica, Vishnu is called SAPTA MAHA BHAGAVAN or the SEVEN
GREAT GOD. For an example of HPB's speculation about the Sacred
Seven in wisdom teachings see (10) below. BHOG in Russian and the
Slavic Bibles is translated as 'GOD' and is cognate with Sri
Krishna's Sanskrit Name Bhaga, as in BHAGAVAN, BHAGAVAD-GITA, SRIMAD
BHAGAVATAM OR BHAGAVAT PURANA ETC. All sevens, including the seven
day week were sacred to Krishna-Vishnu or Bhagavan. One of His forms
was associated with each day of his sacred seven day week. Friday was
the day of Sukla or Sukra-Bala, the Lord as the Spiritual Master and
Redeemer of the most fallen (thus His Friday Crucifixion as Yupa
Dhvaja). Saturnday was the day of His wrathful Form as the
Leontocephalic Time (Haryeh or Aryeh). Sunday was His day of
celebration as Surya Narayana, the Gayatri Mantra-related Golden Form
of Hari situated within the heart of our local Sun Planet. The Saturn-
Day Seven Sabbath was associated with the rescue and protection of
the helpless and oppressed, and the Divine Patronage of righteous
kshatriyas (fighters) as LIBERATORS. SEVEN, SEVENTY = SHEBA, SHIBAN
in Hebrew, a pun on the Deity Name Shiva. Compare Greek SEBA and
Sanskrit SIVA meaning 'auspicious'. Helios Hebdo-magenous was
associated with both Jupiter Saturnus and Jupiter Capitolinus with
His two 'goddesses' on the SEVEN HILLS OF ROME. This same cult of
the Lord of Sevens was associated in India with the worship of
Krishna as BALAJI or SAPTA GIRI RAJA,with His 'Consorts' or Shaktis
BHU and SRI on the SEVEN HILLS OF VENKATESHVARA (Latin Septa = Greek
Hebdo = Sanskrit Sapta). Shiva's connections to the Sacred Seven are
well known and related to His origin in Bala Deva Sankarshana.
Shankarshana's alter-Form is the Seven-Headed An-anta Sarpa Sesha
Naga, Who is the Mediterranean region's Un-end-ing Seraph / Serpent
Seshat Nachush of the Bible and Egypt. This Seraph / Sarpa Form of
the Lord is the Serpent of Infinity, Who always accompanies the Lion-
Headed Form of the Lord of Time and the Seven Day week. At Rome the
cults of Mars and Janus were related to the Eastern cults of Skanda-
Marugan and Ganesha.

BA G > Some Sevens Cult Connections

> Saturnus = Sanivara 'Son' or Emanation of Helios or Surya (not to
be confused with late astrology and the Planet Saturn).

> R = Roman, G = Greek, S = Sanskrit, E = Egyptian, H = Hebrew

> R septa = G hebdo = S sapta

> E Seshat = S Shesha

> Serpent = H Seraph = S Sarpa

> H Nachush = S Naga

> Seven = H Sheba / Shivan

> R Janus = S Ganesha

> R Mars = S Skanda = Marugan

BA G > Vaishnavas and their closely related PURE LAND BUDDHISTS, in
such geographically remote places as Nepal-Tibet,Tamil Nadu and Sri
Lanka, observed Feminine Sani Devi's Saturn-day Sabbath. Saturday
Sabbath was associated with Sri Krishna's Bhagavad-gita Theophany as
the wrathful all-devouring Form of God as Time...the Bible's YAHU
TZABAOTH, Who is the 'LEONTOCEPHALIC' lion-headed Kalah Purusha
(11). For an example of Sri Krishna in this Form, in Bali during the
festival dances depicting Sri Krishna's BVG Theophany, the mask worn
by the Krishna dancer has multiple leonid heads. Such multiple heads
are associated with the Universal Form of God, and the lion head is
associated with His duo-nature as Time, Protector and Deliverer of
the righteous and Destroyer of the wicked. Thus Bhagavad-gita Sri
Krishna as KALAH, is SHIVA KALAH BAIRAVA, THE PERSIAN ZERVAN, ZEUS
CHRONUS, YAHU TZABAOTH (EXODUS ELI-YAHU as the COSMIC 'LORD OF
HOSTS'), JUPITER SATURNUS (where the name 'SATURDAY' comes from), and
the EGYPTIAN and AFRICAN FORMS OF HERU-ASAR (OSIRIS), THE ALL-GOD AS
COSMIC AND ETERNAL TIME. All these Forms of the Supreme Godhead were
depicted by the ancients as leontocephalic (art-history term for
them) or lion-headed, and these Forms were generally associated with
the sacred number 7, the SEVEN DAY WEEK and the Saturn-day Sabbath.
They were also associated with the macrocosmic Body of God as Time-
Man (Kalah Purusha), various composite Cherubs, Seraphs, Chimera,
Sphinxes and other 'Zodiac Beasts'. In the Mediterranean Region,
this Form of the Supreme Lord was also connected to HELIOS (Heru-Asu
or Heru-Amun / Zeus, Jupiter) in His 3-eyed Form as Triocculous or
Triopes. HELIOS / ELI-YAHU / HERU-ASU (KOUROS = KRISHNA) was called
HEBDOMAGENOUS as appearing, being born in all sevens, or on the
seventh day. As SAPTA MAHA BHAGAVAN, Sri Krishna is the Great Lord of
all sevens. Vishnu's alter-Form as the Seraphic Ananta Sesha Naga,
Who usually accompanies His lion-headed Form, is frequently depicted
with seven heads. Like Sankarshan, Ananta is also associated with
SHIVA or SHIVAN, Whose Name in Hebrew MEANS SEVEN. SEVEN = H. SHIVAN
= SANSKRIT DEITY SHIVAN, the GREAT LORD OF ALL SEVENS. In Northern
Buddhism, for instance in Nepal and Tibet, Shiva or Maha Kalah
(Mahadeva) is considered to be a wrathful Form of Lokeshvara.
Lokeshvara is Vishnu, so this shows that Shaivite teachings in
Northern Buddhism are from the more ancient Vedic-Vaishnava
Tradition, and not any later separatist form of Shaivism.

BA G > Of course this importance of the sacred sevens comes through
into Buddhism and Shaivism in many ways. Thus there are stories about
SANIVARI, the feminine 'Goddess' Sacred Saturday Sabbath, in the
Shaivite and Shakti Traditions as well. In the Shaivite Tradition for
example, there is the story about SANI DEVI and GANESHA'S ELEPHANT
HEAD.

BA G > SANI DEVI is a Shakti of Krishna-Vishnu, and as such is
associated in the Mediterranean with SHEKINAH as QUEEN SABBATH, WHO
IS ELI-YAHU'S ARYEH'S OR KRISHNA-VISHNU HARYEH'S SACRED DAY.
Observance of this Holy Day was carried through into the Roman World
in the cultus of JUPITER SATURNUS AND JUNO SATUREJA. Eventually it
ended up in CATHOLICISM as devotion to MARY as Queen Sabbath through
the teachings of Her 'SABBATINE PRIVILEGE'. This devotion is offered
to Mary as Mother Most Tolerant, Who is the only Refuge of priest /
Christ slayers. In India and Asia, this particular worship of the all-
merciful Shakti of Krishna-Vishnu is common in TULASI VENERATION.
Both JUNO SATUREJA as BASILEA, and MARY as BASILEA are KRISHNA-
VISHNU'S SACRED BASIL or MINTHA as TULASI DEVI. TULASI-VASUDEVI is
MARY BASILEA, QUEEN MOTHER MOST TOLERANT (the Sanskrit root 'TULA' is
cognate with the Latin root of TOLERANT). The sacred labiate herbs
(mint family) were used in the ancient world to 'revive the dead' .
Crushed between the fingers, a leaf of the mint family with strong
enough aromatic oils CAN revive and unconscious person or even re-
start a stopped heart ! Thus the Sacred Labiate is known throughout
the ancient world as holy to the Supreme Deity as the Great Physician
ANANTA CHARAKA / ASCLEPIUS / SERAPIS. All-Heal Heracleum, Rhoda-
mantys (Radha's Mint), Basilea (Basil), KINGS-WORT, KONIG'S-KRAUT,
Minthe (a Name for KORE), and Satureja are all Names of the Sacred
Labiate. She is the Herb of Immortality in the Epic of Gilgamesh,
the Sacred Herb Hanuman brings to revive God in the Ramayana, the
Hyssopus offered to Eli-Yahu in the Old Testament, and the Sacred
Herb at the foot of the Cross in the Crucifixion Passion of Jesus
Christ Purusha. Legend later describes how Saint Helena discovered
the site of the Cosmic Sacrifice of Purusha Yupa Dhvaja, because the
hill was covered with sacred BASIL / Tulasi Bushes. Tulasi may
regionally be any member of the Sacred Labiate Family ( for example
the variety venerated in Thailand is different than that in most of
India), However the most common Form of Tulasi / Tulsi found in India
and in Catholicism is OCIMUM SANCTUM or SACRED BASIL. This variety
is also called MOUNTAIN BASIL, MOUNTAIN MINT or BUSH BASIL. Tulasi
veneration ties-together many of the kinds of Shekinah / Shakti
worship in the ancient world.

BA G >SHEKINAH / SHAKTI WORSHIP RELATED TO OUR LADY OF THE SABBATINE
PRIVILEGE

BA G> MARY MARIAM BASILEA MOTHER MOST TOLERANT IS JUNO MARINA BASILEA
MOTHER MOST TOLERANT = SATUREJA = QUEEN SABBATH, SATURJA= SACRED
BASIL = MINTHE (PUN SEE MINT TEMPLES OF TYCHE AS MONETA-FORTUNA AND
LAKSHMI), MINTHE = RHADAMANTYS = KORE, KORE = RHODA, RHODA = NYMPHIA
(LOTUS = PADMA or SRI, LAKSHMI), KORE = HARE, RHODA = NYMPHIA =
SEKHET (SYMBOL HEXAD for HEKATE) = SHEKINAH, NYMPHIA-RHODA-KORE-HEXAD
= ASTERIA 'STAR' = TARA ETC. The HEXAD represents SHEKINAH / SHAKTI
as the ROSE (Radha or Mary the Mystical Rose), LOTUS ( Nymphia or
Padma) or STAR (Mary Stella, Asteria, Astraya or Tara) BELOVED OF
KRISHNA THE MEGHISTOS KOUROS.

BA G > For Meghistos Kouros as the origin of all the gods,
see "Themis: A Study of the Social Origins of Greek Religion" by Jane
E. Harrison. As Meghistos Kouros was the origin of all the gods, His
Feminine Kore was the Origin of all the goddesses. Thus there is a
direct mapping-on between the Expansions / Emanations and
Incarnations of Rhoda and Kouros in the Mediterranean region and
those of Radha and Krisha in the Indic Traditions. (12)

BA G > The official calendar of Nepal is organized around the
Country's sacred Saturday Sabbath, which may be observed alike by
Vaishnavas, Shaivites, Mahayana Buddhists and Shakti / Devi
Worshipers. The day may be associated with stories of the 'goddess'
SANI VARI in Nepal, Tamil Nadu and other Places where the Bhagavad-
gita related worship of the Leontocephalic Krishna-Vishnu is
present. Sri Krishna's Sani Day is observed in some ways identical
to those in Israel today ! In Nepal banks are closed and business may
be avoided, as in Tamil Nadu where devotees may fast, chant extra '
rounds' of prayer on their beads, abstain from mundane travel and
work activities, attend the temple and perform special 'Sabbath'
rituals.

BA G > The Ancients said that the Great Lord of the Number Seven was
the Protector of Israel. In His Form as Saturnus / YHVH Tzabaoth, He
was the Patron of Armies and the Lord of the Starry Host as well. HE
WAS NOT THE LATE 'ASTROLOGICAL' PLANET SATURN, BUT THE LION-HEADED
FORM OF TIME AS ELI-YAHU TZABAOTH or JUPITER SATURNUS , WHO WAS
IDENTIFIED WITH THE GREEK HELIOS TRIOCCULOUS, ZEUS TRIOPES CHRONUS,
EGYPTIAN HERU-AMUN (OR AMUN-RA), AFRICAN APADEMAK, MITHRAIC
ZOROASTRIAN AND ZERVANITE ZERVAN (see BON ANCIENT PROTECTOR ZA),
SHAIVITE MAHAKALA, VAISHNAVA AND PURE LAND BUDDHIST KRISHNA-VISHNU
KALAH (see JAH HU[M] BA[M] HOH MAHADEVA at the POTALA), WHO was the
central THEOPHANY OF HARI-VASU / ELI-YAHU (KRISHNA-VISHNU) REVEALED
AS TIME DEVOURING CREATION IN THE BHAGAVAD-GITA AND EXODUS.

BA G > KRISHNA-VISHNU SAPTA MAHA BHAGAVAN / HELIOS HEBDOMAGENOUS AND
JESUS AS PURUSHA YUPA DHVAJA

BA G > 'TIME' in Sanskrit is KALAH, KRISHNA-VISHNU'S SELF-REVELATION
IN HIS BHAGAVAD-GITA THEOPHANY. As the COSMOS, Kalah Purusha is
called the VIRATA or VISHVA RUPA FORM OF VISHNU. This Form is
identified with JAGGANATHA (worshiped at PURI in India) and should be
compared to the Egyptian DJE DJE NOUTI Form of Heru-Asu / Eli-Yahu in
Egypt and the Levant. Jagganatha, Whose Body is Black and covered
with stars, is doctrinally related to the KALAH PURUSHA Universal
Form of God as Vishnu's embodiment as the Cosmic-Man Form of Time.
In the BVG, Arjuna could see everything in the duration of our
universe in the Vishva Rupa Body of Sri Krishna Kalah. In the same
way, through the anointed eyes of Bhakti Yoga, if one contemplates
the Purusha as the Self-Sacrificed Yupa Dhvaja, then one may receive
the darshan / divine vision of Jesus as Purusha the Original Purohita
Priest and Spiritual Master 'taking the sins of the cosmic
manifestation' and thus 'balancing the karma' of the universe, to
purchase the MOKSHA / MISSA / MASS / MANUMISSION of all beings in the
cosmos. YUPA DHVAJA is the Name of Purusha as SELF-SACRIFICE, Whose
eternal symbol (dhvaja = flag, banner, symbol coat-of arms) the YUPA
( cross post or stake) is the instrument of His Rig Vedic Cosmic
sacrifice MW 856.

BA G > A final note on the sacred sevens of Sapta Maha Bhagavan,
compare the seven 'RISHIS' (SEERS) of the Vedas and Puranas with
the 'ROEHS' (SEERS) of the Biblical tradition. The PUROHITA Fire
Priests of Hari-Vasu were the PROPHETA Fire Priests of HELIOS, HERU-
ASU (HORUS the ELDER) and ELI-YAHU. The SOMA rite / ritya of Vishnu
delivered the 'blood of Purusha' as the AMRITA / AMBROSIA of
IMMORTALITY to the faithful in His Sacred KALASHA / CALIX /
CHALICE . The West's Heliopolitan Asyla Federation Mass Rites of
Manumission were the East's Bhakti Yoga Moksha-Rityas of salvation /
liberation. Initiates of Helios appended tes, tas, des or das to
their initiated theophoric names as sons or servants of HELIOS, and
Vaishnavas appended Dasa or Dasi to their initiated theophoric names
as the servants of HARI-VASU. In the West the Eucharistic Mystery
Theophagos Feasts commemorated the once-and-all-sufficient Self
Sacrifice of ASAR (Osiris, Asclepius, Serapis, Yahu, Dionysos) the
Cosmic Man. In the East the offerings and PRASADAM sacramental meals
commemorated the same Self-Sacrifice of the Cosmic Purusha of the
Purusha Sukta. Prasadam as a contraction of PURUSHA -IDAM means
the 'remnants of the Sacrifice of Purusha'. In the West the Theseus
or Heracles tonsure identified initiates of Helios, and in the East,
the Sikha 'flag' on the heads of the Vaishnavas identified them.
The ancient 'V', 'Y' or 'O' or 'eye' cult marks of Helios in the West
are still used as TILAKA body-marking among Vaishnavas in the East.
Krishna-Vishnu's messengers were the ANGIRAS / AGELLOS / ANGELOS /
ANGELS. His Righteous Holy Ones were SADHAKAS, compare the Jewish
TZADDIKs and Greek ASCETICS. A SADHU SANGA is a SYNAGEIN (synagoge)
of TSADDIKS. Krishna's Narayana Cultus practiced ritual bathing to
wash away sin, and the MIZRAYAM / NAHARIAM and NAZAREANS among the
Egyptians, Jews and Mesopotamians did the same thing. The detailed
correspondences on every level of doctrine, symbol, Name-Form / Nama -
Rupa and practice, and during every time period between the Western
and Eastern worship of the Great Lord of the number seven are
astounding. The only thing more astounding is that primarily due to
ethno-centric prejudice, modern humanity is in ignorance of the fact
that Ancient Africans, Indo-Europeans and Semites worshiped the same
Supreme Deity.

BA G > Because Gnosticism-related Western Esotericists are hostile to
Catholic Apostolic Christianity and are historically allied to Sufi,
Hindu and Buddhist Impersonalist or Mayavadi Traditions, the
speculative syncretistic work of persons like H.P. Blavatsky has
often not helped, but has hindered our present understanding of these
MONOTHEISTIC connections. Both Aryanism, which denied and suppressed
evidence of these connections, and covered esoteric atheism, worked
against discovery of the FACT that the Biblical Deity, the Greek
Deity of Rhodes, the African Deity of Heliopolis and Hari-Vishnu
(Buddhist Amitabha Lokesvara) were the same God of Grace and Sattvic
sacramental social order in both the East and West.

BA G > Furthermore, in her writings, HPB constantly confounds Vishnu
Purusha as Brahman with the GUNA AVATARA OF THE 'MODE' OF PASSION,
BRAHMA. Her reliance on Advaiti Shaivites, Buddhists and Sikhs for
her understanding of the Vedic-Vaishnava Shastras only confused her.
Without accepting proper instruction from any Vaishnava Masters, her
exposition is quite flawed. However, for a non-initiate corrupted by
Theravadin and Hindu Mayavadi Atheism, she still had some important
realizations and made some good connections. Unfortunately her own
prejudices blinded her to the most important East-West connection of
all. Her work deserves to be studied by academics for many reasons,
and it raises many important questions. What might she have achieved
if she was not so hostile to Catholicism and Monotheism in general ?
So much eluded this brilliant and often well-motivated woman, because
of her prejudices. Still H.P. Blavatsky's literary offering was an
enormous and significant accomplishment, which deserves critical
scholarly study for its unique contributions.

4. The Hierarchies of Beings

The Scriptures and religious traditions of all cultures make frequent
reference to non-human entities, variously termed Angels, Devas,
Gods, Spirits of one kind or another. In mythology these beings
appear as nature-spirits, fairies, sylphs, salamanders, to name but a
few. Esoteric Science supports universal tradition in affirming that
the different planes of Nature are peopled by hierarchies of beings,
each with characteristic properties and modes of functioning. In the
Bible there are well-known instances of angelic appearances, singly
as "the angel of the Lord" or as "a multitude of the heavenly host."
The "thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers" mentioned
several times by St Paul are terms well recognized in angelology for
some of the non-human hierarchies. Everywhere in Nature there is
life, manifesting through infinite gradations of individual lives,
for there is neither empty space nor inanimate matter anywhere in the
universe.

...

BA G > HPB writes a lot about her thought-system's equivalent of the
planetary etc.devas. The Vedic Hymns are variously addressed to the
plural "Devas" or Vishve Devah as Forms of the One Vishva Deva or
Vasu-Deva, the Supreme God Purusha. The Vishva Devas are now
interpreted by moderns as 'demigods' and associated with Western
Gnosticism and astrology. However, historically the devas have NO
separate existence from the DEVA DEVA Who was considered their
Origin. I have studied over 3,000 ancient Deity and theophoric
personal names in depth, and can report with complete confidence that
the Monotheistic use of NTR, Elohim, Vasudeva, Surya (Helios)
indicates the same Deity, often when used in the plural as 'Forms' or
Persons of the Godhead, and in other contexts indicates those beings
of-from-or-related-to the same Godhead. If we compare the original
Heliopolitan and Theban Egyptian ASU / WASU-Theos, and the YAHU /
Ousios 'gods' and elohima of the Greek and Hebrew Bible, it is clear
that these are FORMS of HERU-ASU / ELI-YAHU (ASAR=Osiris) or HARI-
VASU Who have appeared from the cosmic body of the SELF-SACRIFICED
PURUSHA (VISHNU ) AS YUPA DHVAJA. These Vasudevas (compare the
Hebrew By-Names of YAHU, with the Egyptian By-Names of ASU and WASU)
(see charts (13) and (14) ) , were not originally separate mundane
and competing demigods, but were considered cosmic emanations and
local NOME or temple district POLIEUS INCARNATIONS of the ONE SUPREME
LORD YAHU, ASU (HELIOPOLITAN OSIRIS), THE THEBAN WASU OR VEDIC-
VAISHNAVA VASU DEVA. In HPB's system, however, the devas are
reduced from Forms of the transcendent Supreme Godhead, to the mere
mundane planetary regents etc. of polytheism.

BA G > God and 'The Gods'
VASUDEVA and the Vasudevas
SURA (SURIH, HRIH, HARIH) and the Suragana
SURA and the Surajana
SURYA and the Suryana
HARI and the Haryanna
HARI and the Harijana
ARI and the Aryana (or Aryama)
ELOHIMA and the Elohima or Elym
WASU-THEOS and the Wasu-Theos
BASLEIOS and the Basileos
NTR and the Neteru
NATHA and the Nathas
PURUSHA and the Purushas
etc.

5. Elements and Elementals

These are examples of the hierarchical structure of the Cosmos. The
Elements, in Esoteric Science, are seven in number, the four familiar
ones of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, to which it adds a semi-material
Ether that is still invisible to us, and two others which are "as yet
absolutely beyond the range of human perception." (7) Yet all of
these, it must always be remembered, are aspects of the One Universal
Element, the source of all objective existence.

These seven elements with their numberless Sub-Elements ¼ are simply
conditional modifications and aspects of the one and only Element. (8)

Elementals is the term used to refer to beings who are beginning a
course of evolutionary growth, and who thus are in the elemental
state of growth. In general the term refers to beings who are below
the mineral kingdom in the evolutionary scheme. Their existence is
universally recognized in folk-lore under such names as fairies,
elves, gnomes and suchlike, as mentioned earlier. But they are best
understood as forces in Nature rather than as beings having miniature
or ethereal human shapes.

[For more information, see Mr. Farthing's Elements and Elementals,
Part I and Elements and Elementals, Part II.]

BA G >In the Puranas and the Bhagavad-gita, the seven 'elements' as
above are given as earth, air, fire, water, ether, mind and
intelligence with 8.false-ego and then the true finite self, the
Jivatma and the Infinite Lord (The Supreme Self) as Paramatma ruling
over all. There are beings in every realm. Some of these can be
understood in terms of the Catholic concept of presiding angels.

6. Universal Law

It is apparent even to superficial observation that the universe
operates according to Law. All our sciences and technologies are
based on the recognition of this fact. This law is not imposed from
outside but is the very nature of the Cosmos. Fundamentally it is the
law of cause and effect, action and reaction, by which the Cosmos as
a whole, and all its parts individually, are ordered and regulated.
The Law is in itself Wisdom, Intelligence, and Power; it is the
Wisdom that "reacheth from one end [of the Universe] to another
mightily; and sweetly doth she order all things," (9) operating
through the Hierarchies of beings by which the Cosmos is made and
maintained as one harmonious whole.

[For more information, see Mr. Farthing's Law in Cosmos and Human
Life, Part I and Law in Cosmos and Human Life, Part II.]

BA G > This is Dharma and Karma. God's Law (Torah) and the Biblical
Greek Krima / God's Judgment, is related to Krishna-Vishnu as VISHVA
KARMAN or KARTRI or KRITA-KRITA the Creator or Creators. The root of
Krita / Creator and Karman is the same. In the authentic Vedic-
Vaishnava sources there is no separating the doctrine of KARMA and
that of the CREATOR / KRITA. Thus in the Biblical tradition, KRIMA /
KARMA is always associated with the JUDGMENT of the PERSONAL GOD, the
Creator of the Universe's Cosmic Order or Natural Law and ITS
consequences. VIshnu's Vedic Name VISVA-KARMAN is given on MW Page
994 as the Rig Vedic ALL-DOER, all-Creator, all-Maker and He is
identified with Prajapati, Brahma, the All-seeing God, and Architect
of the Universe. See also MW Pages 253, 254 KARA doer, creator,
Latin CERUS root KRI and Page 301 passim for KRI, KRITA making,
doing. Krishna-Vishnu as KRITA the Creator is Karana-Malin Who is
garlanded with creating RAY-HANDS or KARA. Thus His Icon is the
same in India, Buddhist Lands and in Egypt and the Levant, where His
circle CHAKRA glyph is surrounded by His HARINI / CORONA or KARANA
MALIN 'garland of ray-hands'. Compare the famous symbol of HERU-ATEN
[HARI-ATMAN] in the late 18th Dynasty Egypt of AKHEN-ATEN. In all
the related ancient systems of Dharma and Karma, the universal 'law'
of action and reaction or consequence was understood ONLY in relation
to God the Creator, Law Maker and Judge. Thus in Egypt Heru-Asar as
the Dog-Headed Anubis (YAMA AS DHARMA AT THE END OF THE MAHABHARATA
[M]) accompanies and judges the dead, and then as KHNUM (Vishva
KARMAN) fashions new bodies for them out of clay (the elements of
Earth, see Genesis) on His cosmic Potter's Wheel, which is a Kala
Chakra or time wheel of periodic creation.

BA G > In the BVG 10.29, Sri Krishna says "...among the dispensers of
law, I am Yama, lord of death." Krishna-Vishnu as Judge of the dead
is Dharma / Yama. In M Buddhism Yama may be found represented as
Yamantaka vestured in red and riding on a black buffalo. In the Veda
(RV X.14,1) Yama is the son of Vivasvat and in Iranian Tradition He
is again found in the story of Yima son of Vivahant. In these
Traditions Yama's realm is not just a place or state of punishment,
but He also presides over the heaven of heroes, kings and the
righteous dead. In West Semitic and related Biblical Tradition He
appears as Yam the son of EL who judges the dead before allowing any
to cross the river to the Nether World (see Egyptian NETER, Nouti and
Sanskrit Natha). He appears again in his blood-red robe in the Bible
New Testament Apocalypse ( Protestant Book of Revelations) as Jesus
the Universal Judge (Pantocrator). As the Son of the 'Sun' Yama is
confounded with the late astrological malevolent Planetary Regent
Saturn. Due to the confusion caused by astrology, Pluto, Saturn,
Yama, Kala, Siva, Serapis and Asclepius were confounded in various
ways in the Mediterranean and the East, and later evil associations
were even introduced by the Gnostics who mistook Yama, Siva-Kalah,
Nara Hari or Zervan for the 'Devil', Set or Ahriman. Dharma was
always associated in the ancient Eastern system with YAMA. He
was 'incarnate in' / empowered righteous kings (rajarshis). He was
the Father of the Eldest Pandava Hero Yudhisthira (taking the form of
a dog at the end of the M. Epic, compare Anubis) and his symbol is
also the 'Bull of Dharma'. As righteousness Yama / Dharma was
associated with the right hand and as Death His direction was the
South or the West. The west was the land of ASAR as the First to
die (Yama) and the Lord of both the 'living and the dead'. In Hebrew
Yam or Yamin may mean West or Right Hand, and Yom may mean Time. Of
course as Death He was also associated with Kala or Time, as in the
BVG when Sri Krishna appears as the Time of Death to the soldiers in
the Great War. Sri Krishna announces that He is both Kalah (Time)
and Yama in the same Theophany, who has come to uphold His Universal
Dharma.

(10) SACRED SEVENS IN HPB's SPECULATION

HPB THE SECRET DOCTRINE

THE SEPTENARY IN THE EXOTERIC WORKS.
We may now examine other ancient Scriptures and see whether they
contain the septenary classification, and, if so, to what degree.

As much, if not much more, even than in the Jewish Bible, scattered
about in the thousands of Sanskrit texts, some still unopened, others
yet unknown, as well as in all the Puranas, the numbers seven and
forty-nine (7 x 7) play a most prominent part. They are found from
the Seven creations in Chapter I., down to the seven rays of the Sun
at the final Pralaya, which expand into Seven Suns and absorb the
material of the whole Universe. Thus the Matsya Purana has: "For the
sake of promulgating the Vedas, Vishnu, in the beginning of a Kalpa,
related to Manu the story of Narasimha and the events of seven
Kalpas." Then again the same Purana shows that "in all the
Manvantaras, classes of Rishis* appear by seven and seven, and having
established a code of law and morality depart to felicity" -- the
Rishis representing many other things besides living Sages.

In Hymn xix., 53, of Atharva Veda (Dr. Muir's translation) one
reads: --

[[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------
*" These are the seven persons by whom in the several Manvantaras" --
says Parasara -- "created beings have been protected. Because the
whole world has been pervaded by the energy of the deity, he is
entitled Vishnu, from the root Vis 'to enter' or 'pervade,' for all
the gods, the Manus, the Seven Rishis, the Sons of the Manu, the
Indras, all are but the impersonated potencies (Vibhutayah) of
Vishnu" (Vish. Purana). Vishnu is the Universe; and the Universe
itself is divided in the Rig Veda into seven regions -- which ought
to be sufficient authority, for the Brahmins, at all events.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

[[Vol. 2, Page]] 612 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.
" 1. Time carries (us) forward, a steed, with seven rays, a thousand
eyes, undecaying, full of fecundity. On him intelligent sages mount;
his wheels are all the worlds."

"2. Thus Time moves on seven wheels; he has seven naves; immortality
is his axle. He is at present all these worlds. Time hastens onward
the first God."

"3. A full jar is contained in Time. We behold him existing in many
forms. He is all these worlds in the future. They call him 'Time in
the highest Heaven' " . . . .

Now add to this the following verse from the Esoteric volumes: --

"Space and Time are one. Space and Time are nameless, for they are
the incognizable THAT, which can be sensed only through its seven
rays -- which are the Seven Creations, the Seven Worlds, the Seven
Laws," etc., etc., etc. . . .

Remembering that the Puranas insist on the identity of Vishnu with
Time and Space*; and that even the Rabbinical symbol for God is
MAQOM, "Space," it becomes clear why, for purposes of a manifesting
Deity -- Space, Matter, and Spirit -- the one central point became
the Triangle and Quaternary (the perfect Cube), hence Seven. Even the
Pravaha wind (the mystic and occult Force that gives the impulse to,
and regulates the course of the stars and planets) is septenary. The
Kurma and Linga Puranas enumerate seven principal winds of that name,
which winds are the principles of Cosmic Space. They are intimately
connected with Dhruva** (now Alpha), the Pole-Star, which is
connected in its turn with the production of various phenomena
through cosmic forces.

Thus, from the Seven Creations, seven Rishis, Zones, Continents,
Principles, etc., etc. in the Aryan Scriptures, the number has passed
through Indian, Egyptian, Chaldaic, Greek, Jewish, Roman, and finally
Christian mystic thought, until it landed in and remained impressed
indelibly on every exoteric theology. The seven old books stolen out
of Noah's ark by Ham, and given to Cush, his son, and the seven
Brazen columns of Ham and Cheiron, are a reflection and a remem-

[[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------
* Vishnu is all -- the worlds, the stars, the seas, etc.,
etc. "Vishnu is all that is, all that is not . . . . but is not
Vastubhuta," "a substance" (Vishnu Purana, Book II. ch. xii). "That
which people call the highest God is not a substance but the cause of
it; not one that is here, there, or elsewhere, not what we see, but
that in which all is -- SPACE."

[SAPTA MAHA BHAGAVAN]

[[Vol. 2, Page]] 624 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.
weeks" -- which is based on the archaic Indian system, which may
still be found in the old Jyotisha.* And there are in it cycles
of "the week of days," of the "week of months," of years, of
centuries, and even of millenniums, decamillenniums, and more,
or "the week of years of years."** But all this can be found in the
archaic doctrine. And if this common source of the chronology in
every Scripture, however veiled, is denied in the case of the Bible,
then the six days, and a Sabbath, the seventh, can hardly disconnect
Genesis from the Puranic Cosmogonies. For the first "Week of
Creation" shows the septiformity of its chronology and thus connects
it with Brahma's "Seven Creations." The able volume from the pen of
Mr. Grattan Guinness, in which he has collected on some 760 pages
every proof of that septiform calculation, is good evidence. For if
the Bible chronology is, as he says, "regulated by the law of weeks,"
and if it is septenary, whatever the measures of the creation week
and the length of its days; and if, finally, "the Bible system
includes weeks on a great variety of scales," then this system is
shown to be identical with all the pagan systems. Moreover, the
attempt to show that 4,320 years (in lunar months) elapsed
between "Creation" and the Nativity, is a clear and unmistakable
connection with the 4,320,000 of the Hindu Yugas. Otherwise, why make
such efforts to prove that these figures, which are pre-eminently
Chaldean and Indo-Aryan, play such a part in the New Testament? We
shall prove it now still more forcibly.

Let the impartial critic compare the two accounts -- the Vishnu
Purana and the Bible -- and he will find that the "seven creations"
of Brahma are at the foundation of the "week" of creation in Genesis
i. The two allegories are different, but the systems are all built on
the same foundation-stone. The Bible can be understood only by the
light of the Kabala. Take the Zohar, the "Book of Concealed Mystery,"
however now disfigured, and compare. The seven Rishis and the
fourteen Manus of the seven Manvantaras -- issue from Brahma's head;
they are his "mind-born sons," and it is with them that begins the
division of mankind and its races from the Heavenly man, "the Logos"
(the manifested), who is Brahma Prajapati. Says (V. 70 in) the "Ha
Idra Rabba Qadisha" (the Greater Holy Assembly) of the skull (head)

[[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------
* See for the length of such cycles or Yugas in Vriddha Garga and
other ancient astronomical Sections (Jyotisha). They vary from the
cycle of five years -- which Colebrooke calls "the cycle of the
Vedas," specified in the institutes of Parasara, "and the basis of
calculation for larger cycles" (Miscell. Essays, Vol. I., pp. 106 and
108) -- up to the Mahayuga or the famous cycle of 4,320,000 years.

** The Hebrew word for "week" is Seven; and any length of time
divided by Seven would have been a "week" in their day, even
49,000,000 years, as it is seven times seven millions. But their
calculation is throughout septiform.
