Dallas,
Yes, I have Judge's Patanjali Yoga Sutra in my favorites also. I also
have Ballentyne's version but Taimni's is more technical and manifold.
This is not
to say that the others also are not relevant as each version offers
perspective
and insight.
In the second sloka of Patanjali in Taimni's version
These four words indicate the essential nature of Yoga:
1. Yoga,rt. Yuj--to join
the primary constituents to be joined;
a. Jivatma
b. Paramatma
2. Citta, rt.Cit or Citi (IV-34)
the Third constituent of the Triad:Purusa-Prakrti-Citta
Citta has Function only when Purusa and Prakrti are
present.
Citta is the Basis of Form side of the Universe,
Citta has Function on all Planes of Consciousness in the
Manisfested Universe,
Citta is not Material.
Citta cannot be known except by Enlightenment.
The reflection of this aspectCitta) in the human soul
which is a microcosm is called citta.
Modern Psychology is confined to:
Expression of:
1. thought
2. volition
3. feeling
3. Vrtti, rt."Vrt" - "to exist"
consider that things exist by means of it's modifications:
1.Modifications
2.States
3. Activities
4. Functions
All implied by Vrtti.
sometimes Vrtti is translated as "Transformations"
the word "functionings" expresses maximum significance relational to
Citta-Purusa-Prakrti
a. Citta-Vrtti is not a vibration
b. Citta is not Material
vibration can take place only In a vehicle and those may
produce a Citta-Vrtti.
The 5-fold classification of Citta-Vrtti
1.Right Knowledge
2. Wrong Knowledge
3. Fancy
4.Sleep
5. Memory
these are the primary states the lower concrete mind can exist in.
4. Nirodha, rt. derived fropm "Niruddham" means
a. Restrained (Initial Stages of Yoga)
b. Controlled (Advanced Stages of Yoga)
c.,Inhibited (Final stages of Yoga
All these meaning are applicable to in the different stages of Yoga.
The Four Words monitor all stages of progress and all strages of
consciousness
which are the result of the progress. Equally they are applicable to;
1. The stage of Kriya Yoga
2. the stage of Dharana Yoga
3. the stage of Dhyana Yoga
4. the stage of "Sabija Samadhi" in which one suppresses the
"seeds" of
Samprajnata-Samadhi.
5. the stage of "Nirbija Samadhi" in which one inhibites all
modifications of Citta and passes beyond the realm of Prakrti
into the world of Reality.
So much of Patanjali. so little time.lol.
In Taimni's Patanjali the "action" of Transcendental adopting a point or
arbitrary location of beingness is consequence of inhibition and
veiling of one's
perpetual transcendent reality of Being. The act itself has
production of Avidya
(ignorance/veiling),it is only an apparency as nothing can be
subtracted from
original transcendental Self Nature. As there is no departing
there is also no arriving.I do think that most admit that
Transcendental Being and Sakti are a
inseperable Unity. A simile I have seen is that Vishnu reclines
on his couch
and dreams and universes manisfest. when the pralaya dawns is
Vishnu asleep or awake? At any rate the terms "Avidya", "Ignorance" are
not an attack on our
earthly ego's, rather it simply indicate a distinct
diferentiation between Transcendent and the three states
relative to material of the triple kingdom as in the Mandukya
Upanishad. As there are the three, waking, dreaming, profound,
yet the unchanging primary cause is substrate for the realitys
found in them.
