Re: Masters 0f Wisdom and Adepts The How and the Why.

Dear Friend:

If one has the time and reads through the early literature of the
THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT one finds that the Masters of Wisdom (Great
Souls), employ bodies of various countries or races. And they are an
actual Brotherhood bonded by wisdom and trust.

Tibet and other places in there world afford the Adepts and the
Brothers shelter, and perhaps those small communities that for
centuries have had little or no contact with the vices of the "outer
world" provide in physical heredity a form that may be more tractable
for the use by a truly Spiritual Being. But, if we look back along
the lines of history, myth and legend we find those whose worked to
awaken a group or mass of people to their own inner "heredity" as
latent "Spiritual Beings," (as Atma-Buddhi Monads), became outstanding
in the lives they lived, because of their kindness, generosity,
willingness to heal, and the careful restraint of their personal
lives. They gave and
demanded no return. They drew man's attention to his own higher
nature. So does Theosophy -- Their gift to present mankind.

When someone questioned Gautama the Buddha: "Who are you ?" He
answered directly, simply" "I am AWAKE." That is worth considering.
Are we awake ? What did he mean ?

Krishna was an Avatar -- one of the most ancient and powerful of these
Brothers who had stood at the earliest moments that marked the rebirth
of the Cosmic Universe, and our Earth, which, we think we know -- all
around us. And if one thinks in terms of time, that is, to our minds
limited by this incarnation, a staggering billions of years ago. But
Krishna as well as ourselves (as DIVINE
Monads) are immortal, eternal beings, ever evolving, ever learning,
until we finally reach in some future incarnation the level of
responsibility that is implied by Mastership. [ If one reads the last
10 or so pages of the VOICE OF THE SILENCE one finds this described
fully. ]

That which unites Them is of course their Wisdom.

What demarks them? They are the Elder Brothers of Humanity, and its
primeval Teachers. [see S D I 272-3] Their Cause is called the
Cause of Sublime Perfection. The preach the Perfectability of
Humanity. They should be thought of as Living Facts. When not using
physical bodies, they live the Akasic realms and are designated the
Nirmanakayas.

They teach that every human is a miniature Universe and has in
potential all the wisdom of the great universe. Man has no limits of
development or Perfectability. It is a never ending process. What
they have achieved, They say anyone can also achieve with
determination to do so. The fact of their existence gives us
encouragement to persevere in our studies, and in the application of
those ethics that immortals put into practice in their own lives,
without seeking to impose it on others. They say: "What Man can
aspire to, Man can Do. "

Knowledge and wisdom find no barriers because of race groups or birth
heredity.

It is the same with "Theosophists" -- not those who use the word
casually, or think of themselves as
such (as one might think we are members of a "religion"), but those
who actually have made themselves into practical and actual brothers
to all humanity. That, in our world, makes up a small but significant
number.

Only the Masters of Wisdom could claim that title (but they don't) as
they quietly and unostentatiously exemplify it. But it is a "title"
(unclaimed) that is acquired over long aeons of concentrated search
and training by the indwelling MONAD the ATMA-BUDDHI-MANAS (the
immortal and permanent "The Three in One"). And they say we also have
the same potential and in due course we will understand that we are
also immortal Pilgrims, and then we will assume the self-guided task
of spiritual self-refinement.

In other words it has nothing to do with the physical heredity of the
body being used.

But why believe me? Any one can (and ought to) read through the
MAHATMA LETTERS and the
LETTERS FROM THE MASTERS OF WISDOM, and see what was written there.
Why depend on
what I say? All individual progress has to be done by the individual
for themselves It cannot be borrowed "wholesale" from others. That
kind of fault (which is caused by hurry and impatience) burdens us
today as we consider the small amount of "free time" we think we have
available. But we must learn to think of seizing opportunities when
we can. We have to make small beginnings. It is possible if
persisted in to achieve great advances, spiritually. But if we
"borrow" or "associate ourselves with" we may be making the beginning
of some fresh religious cult that divides instead of (like Theosophy)
UNITES ALL because it is truly eclectic and is based on a universal
fact in Nature..

There is a great truth in this because what we borrow from another
(say a religion, or an
economic, or political philosophy, or a scientific hypothesis) may not
have been fully or impartially
digested. And, being loaded with some subtle bias, those may lead, if
adopted by us, the
borrower, astray. In fact it is safe to say that on retrospect we
have not always been 100% sure
that we agree with "religion" as taught. preached and practised, or
with a political "platform." We
have to realize that, individually, we are not "sheep" that fit into
any fold. We are the "goats" who
wise herdsmen place among their sheep to lead, because of their
greater independence, common
sense, and daring.

Our problem is impatience. We desire to know and seek any easily
accessible avenue to grasp at
the straws of learning, that for the moment, seem reasonable to us.
But that is an error as we have
eventually to do all the work for ourselves. And that takes time, and
a steady, gentle, measured
application of study and meditation. We have to make wisdom our own
by the admittedly laborious
process of examining, comparing, and then trying to use what we are
offered in words or in texts.
We determine the TRUTH for ourselves, because we are, innately, that
Truth.

Mr. Judge offered a few injunctions that have always appealed to me:
"Masters are not Eastern or
Western, but universal." " Masters? They are Atman and therefore
the every law of Karma itself.
They are in everything in life, and in every phase of our changing
days and years."

"Think, think, think, on the truth that you are not body, brain, or
astral man, but that you are THAT,
and THAT is the Supreme Soul." "The image of the Master is the best
protection against lower
influences; think of the Master as a living man within you."

Best wishes,

Dallas

PS In the first volume of PATH MAGAZINE (1886) New York, there
was printed a 3 part
account under the title of A HINDU CHELAS' DIARY. There we are given
an account of the
development, and finally of a chelas visit to an ancient Himalayan
center where the Mahatmas can
meet. Very interesting and inspiring.

Steve and All,

Well after a month or more of reading about the Mahatma's being
"Tibetan" I will pop in my $.02 as
inquiry in response.

My reading always seemed to me at least to have strongly indicated
they were not Tibetan,
although they frequented and were known to the Tibetan Lama's. I
recall reading somewhere that
they (the Mahatma's) were viewed by the Tibetans as "Elder Brothers"
and that though they at times
presented themselves at certain important occasion, presensing but not
observing or taking active
part in the particular Religious Observations and Rites normal to the
Tibetan they were aloof but
highly respected and their presence was highly regarded by the
Tibetans.
