Where is the Buddha? Where are the "Buddha-Fields?"
How to recognize Him ? Can we become changed ?
Dear Friend:
Yes, right. But no "outside" Buddha can do it for us. [As I read it
, Theosophy teaches there are many who have achieved the level of true
Buddha-hood.]
It is the personality that they transform by a strong, continued and
persistent effort to live and do in living in conditions like ours,
the Right and True. They did this many ages back, an so are our
"elder Brothers." But we must also recognize we are all immortals.
They are, and We are. When one of their bodies dies, they merely
continue their work either on the invisible planes all around us, or,
they use another body and work through it. [ see Chapter 1 in the
OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY ]
They have continuing responsibilities where they are, and where the
great Law of the Universe (KARMA) puts them. They know this. And
they agree to work as a sacrifice in whatever position they are asked
to assume responsibility. [ see SECRET DOCTRINE, I. pp. 272-3, and
ISIS UNVEILED, II, pp. 98-103 ]
We also have continuing responsibilities here, where our Karma has
placed us. Going elsewhere will not change this burden. But we have
to search, and find out what our real responsibilities are, and to
whom. If we do not do that, we live more or less blindly. Theosophy
is a "wake-up" call to the soul of man. To each of us. It urges us to
make ourselves into spiritual beings again, as we were when we
originated into this Manvantara many aeons ago. [ see this described
in SECRET DOCTRINE vol I. ]
They (One of the Buddhas -- also named by some "Rishis," or "Manus")
come from time to time into our world, to teach mankind [ see SECRET
DOCTRINE II P 309 ] -- as the great and honorable Gautama Buddha
did over 2500 years ago. He taught peace, tolerance, and making ones'
Lower self Wise. Many have grasped this. He did not come to found a
religion, but to open our mental "eyes" to an alternative to strife,
struggle, war, terror, and senseless slaughter of innocents. Some of
his disciples, grasping a portion of His teaching, emphasized it, and
from those the several Buddhist sects have arisen. But if we go back
to the Buddha and what he taught, we find they all become unified.
He asked us to grasp the concept that man was an immortal, struggling
every life to improve -- and such improvement as was achieved, was
always carried forward to the next day or "class in this, our School
of Life," For this reason the "Jataka Tales " -- stories of the
previous incarnations of the Buddha, exist. For this, the doctrine of
Karma was taught. We are the "Elder Brothers" to our "skandhas" --
the "little lives" or "Monads of lesser experience" that crowd around
us, and provide us with our "principles," and our physical body.
Theosophy teaches that there is the "BUDDHI" (wise - BUDDHA-LIKE")
PRINCIPLE in each of us Hence the change of our "personality" (the 4
lower "principles") is within our existing capacity. It ( the
potential Buddha ) is right within us, not lost somewhere outside.
If we don't entirely believe this is possible, then consider: How is
it possible for us to have good, virtuous, noble, and altruistic
thoughts? -- and, to know the difference (intuitionally) between good
and bad ? We ( as an independent Mind-being ) already have a basis
from which to make judgments concurring our conduct -- this leads to
the duality of choosing. We, and our choices, are always, at the
point of choice: FREE.
If we all have those great and spiritually true capacities, then the
existing BUDDHA (in potential) inside each of us is already present.
It is already serving us [ see SECRET DOCTRINE II 167, 246-7,
253-5 ].
We are not asked to modify it, but, considering its potential, we as
Mind-beings can aspire to make our present life Buddha-like. That we
can gradually do. It cannot be a big jump because we are not fully
attuned to living and being the TRUTH. We have to do it gradually;
and although we may make errors in our efforts, if we persevere, try,
begin again, then, in due course we change our own lower natures.
Best wishes, see if this is of help.
Dallas
