THE EVOLUTION OF THEOSOPHICAL THOUGHT BETWEEN 1880 AND 1888, PART 2

by Tridandi Sannyasi HH Bhakti Ananda Goswami of the Brahma-Madhva-
Gaudiya Lineage of Vaishnavism

WHAT DOES "DZYAN" MEAN? WHAT DOES H.P. BLAVATSKY PRESENT
THE "STANZAS OF DZYAN" AS, AND WHY DOES SHE USE THE VAISHNAVA BHAKTI
SHASTRAS TO COMMENT ON THE STANZAS?

CONSULTING THE SOURCES, FROM THE MAHATMA LETTERS AND MADAME
BLAVATSKY'S "THE SECRET DOCTRINE" (SD) THE FOLLOWING QUOTES ARE
DEFINITIVE.

DZYAN DEFINED AS DHYAN OR JAN NA

[compare KNOW, GNOSIS, JNANA, DHYANA, DJAN, CH'AN and ZEN]

SE [[Vol. 1, Page]] xx INTRODUCTORY.
For the Esoteric philosophy is alone calculated to withstand, in this
age of crass and illogical materialism, the repeated attacks on all
and everything man holds most dear and sacred, in his inner spiritual
life. The true philosopher, the student of the Esoteric Wisdom,
entirely loses sight of personalities, dogmatic beliefs and special
religions. Moreover, Esoteric philosophy reconciles all religions,
strips every one of its outward, human garments, and shows the root
of each to be identical with that of every other great religion. It
proves the necessity of an absolute Divine Principle in nature. It
denies Deity no more than it does the Sun. Esoteric philosophy has
never rejected God in Nature, nor Deity as the absolute and abstract
Ens. It only refuses to accept any of the gods of the so-called
monotheistic religions, gods created by man in his own image and
likeness, a blasphemous and sorry caricature of the Ever Unknowable.
Furthermore, the records we mean to place before the reader embrace
the esoteric tenets of the whole world since the beginning of our
humanity, and Buddhistic occultism occupies therein only its
legitimate place, and no more. Indeed, the secret portions of
the "Dan" or Jan-na"* ("Dhyan") of Gautama's metaphysics -- grand as
they appear to one unacquainted with the tenets of the Wisdom
Religion of antiquity -- are but a very small portion of the whole.
The Hindu Reformer limited his public teachings to the purely moral
and physiological aspect of the Wisdom Religion, to Ethics and MAN
alone. Things "unseen and incorporeal," the mystery of Being outside
our terrestrial sphere, the great Teacher left entirely untouched in
his public lectures, reserving the hidden Truths for a select circle
of his Arhats. The latter received their Initiation at the famous
Saptaparna cave (the Sattapanni of Mahavansa) near Mount Baibhar (the
Webhara of the Pali MSS.). This cave was in Rajagriha, the ancient
capital of Mogadha, and was the Cheta cave of Fa-hian, as rightly
suspected by some archaeologists.**

[[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------
* Dan, now become in modern Chinese and Tibetan phonetics ch'an, is
the general term for the esoteric schools, and their literature. In
the old books, the word Janna is defined as "to reform one's self by
meditation and knowledge," a second inner birth. Hence Dzan, Djan
phonetically, the "Book of Dzyan."

WHY "...A FEW FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS..." FROM THE STANZAS ARE NOW BEING
PERMITTED TO SEE THE LIGHT.

[[Vol. 1, Page]] xxii INTRODUCTORY.
Works, most remarkable for their ingenious deductions and
speculations, in circulo vicioso, foregone conclusions generally
changing places with premisses as in the syllogisms of more than one
Sanskrit and Pali scholar, appeared rapidly in succession, over-
flooding the libraries with dissertations rather on phallic and
sexual worship than on real symbology, and each contradicting the
other.

This is the true reason, perhaps, why the outline of a few
fundamental truths from the Secret Doctrine of the Archaic ages is
now permitted to see the light, after long millenniums of the most
profound silence and secrecy. I say "a few truths," advisedly,
because that which must remain unsaid could not be contained in a
hundred such volumes, nor could it be imparted to the present
generation of Sadducees. But, even the little that is now given is
better than complete silence upon those vital truths.

WHAT ARE A FEW OF THESE FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS? HPB DEMOTES THE TRIUNE
TRANSCENDENT, INCARNATING AND IMMANENT GODHEAD TO THE STATUS OF A
THEOSOPHICAL MASTER.

[[Vol. 2, Page]] 359 GOD AND NATURE ANTHROPOMORPHIZED.
past Cycles. They will recognise, then, the cause which produces in
history and chronology certain riddles of the ages; the reason why,
for instance, it is impossible for them to assign any reliable date
to Zoroaster, who is found multiplied by twelve and fourteen in the
Dabistan; why the Rishis and Manus are so mixed up in their numbers
and individualities; why Krishna and Buddha speak of themselves as re-
incarnations, i.e., Krishna is identified with the Rishi Narayana,
and Gautama gives a series of his previous births; and why the
former, especially, being "the very supreme Brahma," is yet called
Amsamsavatara -- "a part of a part" only of the Supreme on Earth.
Finally, why Osiris is a great God, and at the same time a "prince on
Earth," who reappears in Thoth-Hermes, and why Jesus (in Hebrew,
Joshua) of Nazareth is recognised, cabalistically, in Joshua, the Son
of Nun, as well as in other personages. The esoteric doctrine
explains it by saying that each of these (as many others) had first
appeared on earth as one of the seven powers of the LOGOS,
individualized as a God or "Angel" (messenger); then, mixed with
matter, they had re-appeared in turn as great sages and instructors
who "taught the Fifth Race," after having instructed the two
preceding races, had ruled during the Divine Dynasties, and had
finally sacrificed themselves, to be reborn under various
circumstances for the good of mankind, and for its salvation at
certain critical periods; until in their last incarnations they had
become truly only "the parts of a part" on earth, though de facto the
One Supreme in Nature.

This is the metaphysics of Theogony. And, as every "Power" among the
SEVEN has (once individualized) in his charge one of the elements of
creation, and rules over it,* hence the many meanings in every
symbol, which, unless interpreted according to the esoteric methods,
generally lead to an inextricable confusion.

AND HPB REDEFINES ATHEISM...

Whatever may be the destiny of these actual writings in a remote
future, we hope to have proven so far the following facts:

(1) The Secret Doctrine teaches no Atheism, except in the Hindu sense
of the word nastika, or the rejection of idols, including every
anthropomorphic god. In this sense every Occultist is a Nastika.

(2) It admits a Logos or a collective "Creator" of the Universe; a
Demi-urgos -- in the sense implied when one speaks of an "Architect"
as the "Creator" of an edifice, whereas that Architect has never
touched one stone of it, but, while furnishing the plan, left all the
manual labour to the masons; in our case the plan was furnished by
the Ideation of the Universe, and the constructive labour was left to
the Hosts of intelligent Powers and Forces. But that Demiurgos is no

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

[[Vol. 1, Page]] 280 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.
personal deity, -- i.e., an imperfect extra-cosmic god, -- but only
the aggregate of the Dhyan-Chohans and the other forces.

As to the latter --

(3) They are dual in their character; being composed of (a) the
irrational brute energy, inherent in matter, and (b) the intelligent
soul or cosmic consciousness which directs and guides that energy,
and which is the Dhyan-Chohanic thought reflecting the Ideation of
the Universal mind. This results in a perpetual series of physical
manifestations and moral effects on Earth, during manvantaric
periods, the whole being subservient to Karma. As that process is not
always perfect; and since, however many proofs it may exhibit of a
guiding intelligence behind the veil, it still shows gaps and flaws,
and even results very often in evident failures -- therefore, neither
the collective Host (Demiurgos), nor any of the working powers
individually, are proper subjects for divine honours or worship. All
are entitled to the grateful reverence of Humanity, however, and man
ought to be ever striving to help the divine evolution of Ideas, by
becoming to the best of his ability a co-worker with nature in the
cyclic task. The ever unknowable and incognizable Karana alone, the
Causeless Cause of all causes, should have its shrine and altar on
the holy and ever untrodden ground of our heart -- invisible,
intangible, unmentioned, save through "the still small voice" of our
spiritual consciousness. Those who worship before it, ought to do so
in the silence and the sanctified solitude of their Souls*; making
their spirit the sole mediator between them and the Universal Spirit,
their good actions the only priests, and their sinful intentions the
only visible and objective sacrificial victims to the Presence. (See
Part II., "On the Hidden Deity.")

(4) Matter is Eternal. It is the Upadhi (the physical basis) for the
One infinite Universal Mind to build thereon its ideations.
Therefore, the Esotericists maintain that there is no inorganic or
dead matter in nature, the distinction between the two made by
Science being as unfounded as it is arbitrary and devoid of reason.

AND FURTHER, THE MATERIAL UNIVERSE IS CALLED MAYA, BUT IN THE
ORIGINAL SOURCES, THIS MAYA IS ONE FORM OF THE SHAKTI / SHEKINAH OF
VISHNU OR SHIVA. IN THE EARLIEST SOURCES THE DOCTRINE OF MAYA OR
PRAKRITI HAS NO SEPARATE EXISTENCE FROM THE THEISTIC BHAKTI
TRADITIONS, WHICH FIRST DESCRIBED MAYA AND PRAKRITI.

HPB ALSO MISSES THE OBVIOUS PERSONAL THEISTIC CONNECTION BETWEEN
ESSE, OUSIOS, YAHU, YESHI, ASU, WASU, VASUDEVA , THE SUPREME SPIRIT
AHURA, ASURA, ASAR-YAHU AND OSIRIS-PURUSHA / POLIEUS. ESSE / BEING
IS ALWAYS PERSONAL IN THE ORIGINAL SOURCES. THE 'GREAT I AM' IS THE
PERSONAL SELF-ASSERTION OF THE TRUNE GODHEAD AS "BEING" IN HISTORY.
IN THE SEPTUAGINT YHVH SAYS IN EXODUS 1.17 "EGO EIMI O THEOS" AND IN
EXODUS 3.14 "EGO EIMI O ON". THESE GREEK WORDS OF THE JEWISH DEITY
ARE COGNATE WITH THOSE SANSKRIT SELF-ASSERTIVE WORDS OF SRI KRISHNA'S
REVELATION IN THE BHAGAVAD-GITA, WHERE HE SAYS AHAM...ASMI...DEVA or
AHAM...ASMI...AUM / BRAHMAN / ONTOS (AUTOS, ATOMOS) BEING.

COMPARE EGO & AHAM, EIMI & ASMI, DEVA & THEOS, AUM (BRAHMAN)AS BEING
AND ON /ONTOS. 'ON' WAS THE SAME DEITY'S NAME AT HELIOPLOIS IN
EGYPT, WHERE HIS CITY-PROTECTOR NAME WAS SPELLED AUM AND 'ON' BY THE
SEMITES. AMUN/ AMEN = AUM = ON OR AUM, THE BRAHMAN ASPECT OF ELI-
YAHU /HELIOS / HERU-ASU / HARI-VASU.

(3.) The Universe is the periodical manifestation of this unknown
Absolute Essence. To call it "essence," however, is to sin against
the very spirit of the philosophy. For though the noun may be derived
in this case from the verb esse, "to be," yet IT cannot be identified
with a being of any kind, that can be conceived by human intellect.
IT is best described as neither Spirit nor matter, but
both. "Parabrahmam and Mulaprakriti" are One, in reality, yet two in
the Universal conception of the manifested, even in the conception of
the One Logos, its first manifestation, to which, as the able
lecturer in the "Notes on the Bhagavadgita" shows, IT appears from
the objective standpoint of

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

[[Vol. 1, Page]] 274 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.
the One Logos as Mulaprakriti and not as Parabrahmam; as its veil and
not the one REALITY hidden behind, which is unconditioned and
absolute.

(4.) The Universe is called, with everything in it, MAYA, because all
is temporary therein, from the ephemeral life of a fire-fly to that
of the Sun. Compared to the eternal immutability of the ONE, and the
changelessness of that Principle, the Universe, with its evanescent
ever-changing forms, must be necessarily, in the mind of a
philosopher, no better than a will-o'-the-wisp. Yet, the Universe is
real enough to the conscious beings in it, which are as unreal as it
is itself.

CONTRARY TO PREVIOUS STATEMENTS OF THE MAHATMAS, HPB NOW IDENTIFIES
THOSE "TRUTHS" WITH THE "INITIATED BRAHMINS" OF GAUTAMA BUDDHA'S
DAY. NOTE THAT IN THIS STATEMENT SHE DOES NOT DISTINGUISH BETWEEN
THE THEISTIC DEVOTIONAL BHAKTI TRADITION BRAHMINS, AND THE ATHEISTIC
ADVAITAN MAYAVADI TRADITION BRAHMINS.

[[Vol. 1, Page]] xxi INTRODUCTORY.

How the pristine purity of these grand revelations was dealt with may
be seen in studying some of the so-called "esoteric" Buddhist schools
of antiquity in their modern garb, not only in China and other
Buddhist countries in general, but even in not a few schools in
Thibet, left to the care of uninitiated Lamas and Mongolian
innovators.

Thus the reader is asked to bear in mind the very important
difference between orthodox Buddhism -- i.e., the public teachings of
Gautama the Buddha, and his esoteric Budhism. His Secret Doctrine,
however, DIFFERED IN NO WISE FROM THAT OF THE INITIATED BRAHMINS OF
HIS DAY . [CAPS MINE, BA G] The Buddha was a child of the Aryan
soil; a born Hindu, a Kshatrya and a disciple of the "twice born"
(the initiated Brahmins) or Dwijas. His teachings, therefore, COULD
NOT BE DIFFERENT FROM THEIR DOCTRINES [CAPS, BA G], for the whole
Buddhist reform merely consisted in giving out a portion of that
which had been kept secret from every man outside of the "enchanted"
circle of Temple-Initiates and ascetics. Unable to teach all that had
been imparted to him -- owing to his pledges -- though he taught a
philosophy built upon the ground-work of the true esoteric knowledge,
the Buddha gave to the world only its outward material body and kept
its soul for his Elect. (See also Volume II.) Many Chinese scholars
among Orientalists have heard of the "Soul Doctrine." None seem to
have understood its real meaning and importance.

AGAIN HPB SEEMS UNCLEAR ABOUT THE THERAVADIN BUDDHIST DOCTRINE OF
ABSOLUTE ANNIHILATION.

That doctrine was preserved secretly -- too secretly, perhaps --
within the sanctuary. The mystery that shrouded its chief dogma and
aspirations -- Nirvana -- has so tried and irritated the curiosity of
those scholars who have studied it, that, unable to solve it
logically and satisfactorily by untying the Gordian knot, they cut it
through, by declaring that Nirvana meant absolute annihilation.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

HPB ON THE "CHIEF WORK ", FROM WHICH THE STANZAS ARE GIVEN,
BEING "UTTERLY UNKNOWN", OR NOT HEARD OF BY ITS PRESENT NAME. NOTE
THAT SHE DISMISSES THE UNAVAILABILITY OF THE TEXT FOR SCIENTIFIC
STUDY AS "OF LITTLE MOMENT" TO OCCULTISTS.

One of the greatest, and, withal, the most serious objection to the
correctness and reliability of the whole work will be the preliminary
STANZAS: "How can the statements contained in them be verified?"
True, if a great portion of the Sanskrit, Chinese, and Mongolian
works quoted in the present volumes are known to some Orientalists,
the chief work -- that one from which the Stanzas are given -- is not
in the possession of European Libraries. The Book of Dzyan
(or "Dzan") is utterly unknown to our Philologists, or at any rate
was never heard of by them under its present name. This is, of
course, a great drawback

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

[[Vol. 1, Page]] xxiii INTRODUCTORY.
to those who follow the methods of research prescribed by official
Science; but to the students of Occultism, and to every genuine
Occultist, this will be of little moment.

HERE HPB DIRECTLY REFERES TO THE FACT THAT THE "MAIN BODY" OF THE
DOCTRINES CAN BE FOUND THROUGHOUT THE SANSKRIT MSS, SOME ALREADY
TRANSLATED. WHAT SANSKRIT MSS ARE THESE ? THEY ARE PREDOMINANTLY
THE BHAKTI SHASTRA OF KRISHNA-VISHNU. HPB DOESN'T EVEN MENTION
THE 'SENZAR' STANZAS OF DZYAN, OR ANY TIBETAN LANGUAGE OR PALI
(THERAVADIN BUDDHIST) SOURCES.

The main body of the Doctrines given is found scattered throughout
hundreds and thousands of Sanskrit MSS., some already translated --
disfigured in their interpretations, as usual, -- others still
awaiting their turn. Every scholar, therefore, has an opportunity of
verifying the statements herein made, and of checking most of the
quotations.

HERE HPB GIVES FIRST PLACE IN HER LIST OF SOURCES TO THE ALMOST
COUNTLESS VOLUMES OF "BRAHMINICAL" ...TEMPLE LITERATURE. THESE ARE
THE SANSKRIT BHAKTI SHASTRA, OR "SHASTERS" MENTIONED IN THE FRIDAY
4TH LETTER BELOW. IN THIS LETTER, THE "SHASTERS" ARE SPOKEN OF
CONTEMPTUOUSLY. (SEE QUOTE BELOW). THIS DICHOTOMY IS A GOOD EXAMPLE
OF THE SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE EVIDENCED IN HPB's WRITINGS BETWEEN THE
PRODUCTION OF THE BUDDHISTIC-IDENTIFIED MAHATMA LETTERS AND MORE
ADVAITI HINDU-IDENTIFIED BRAHMINISM OF THE SECRET DOCTRINE IN
1888.

A few new facts (new to the profane Orientalist, only) and passages
quoted from the Commentaries will be found difficult to trace.
Several of the teachings, also, have hitherto been transmitted
orally: yet even those are in every instance hinted at in the almost
countless volumes of Brahminical, Chinese and Tibetan temple-
literature.

[CAPS FOR EMPHASIS MINE -- -BA G]

Letter from H.P. Blavatsky to A.P. Sinnett. This letter includes a
message from Master Morya.
Dehra Dun. Friday. 4th.

"It is useless for a member to argue `I am one of a pure life, I am a
teetotaller and an abstainer from meat and vice. All my aspirations
are for good' etc. and he, at the same time, building by his acts and
deeds an impassable barrier on the road between himself and us. What
have WE, the DISCIPLE of the true Arhats, of esoteric BUDDHAISM and
of Sang-gyas to do with the SHASTERS and ORTHODOX BRAHMINISM? There
are 100 of thousands of Fakirs, Sannyasis and Saddhus leading the
most pure lives, and yet being as they are, ON THE PATH OF ERROR,
never having had an opportunity to meet, see or even hear of us.
THEIR FOREFATHERS HAVE DRIVEN AWAY THE FOLLOWERS OF THE ONLY TRUE
PHILOSOPHY UPON EARTH AWAY FROM INDIA and now, it is not for the
latter to come to them but to them to come to us if they want us.
Which of them is ready to BECOME A BUDDHIST, a Nastika as they call
us? None."

REGARDING THESE ANCIENT LITERARY SOURCE-WORKS, PLEASE NOTE THAT THE
VATICAN / CATHOLICISM IS USUALLY DEPICTED BY OCCULTISTS AS THE
MALEVOLENT ARCH-ENEMY OF TRUTH FOR SUPPOSEDLY COLLECTING AND HIDING
ANCIENT DOCUMENTS, WHILE THE SAME PRACTICE INDULGED IN BY THE
OCCULT "BROTHERHOODS" , AS MENTIONED HERE, IS LAUDED.

However it may be, and whatsoever is in store for the writer through
malevolent criticism, one fact is quite certain. The members of
several esoteric schools -- the seat of which is beyond the
Himalayas, and whose ramifications may be found in China, Japan,
India, Tibet, and even in Syria, besides South America -- claim to
have in their possession the sum total of sacred and philosophical
works in MSS. and type: all the works, in fact, that have ever been
written, in whatever language or characters, since the art of writing
began; from the ideographic hieroglyphs down to the alphabet of
Cadmus and the Devanagari.

It has been claimed in all ages that ever since the destruction of
the Alexandrian Library (see Isis Unveiled, Vol. II., p. 27), every
work of a character that might have led the profane to the ultimate
discovery and comprehension of some of the mysteries of the Secret
Science, was, owing to the combined efforts of the members of the
Brotherhoods, diligently searched for. It is added, moreover, by
those who know, that once found, save three copies left and stored
safely away, such works were all destroyed. In India, the last of the
precious manuscripts were secured and hidden during the reign of the
Emperor Akbar.*

It is maintained, furthermore, that every sacred book of that kind,
whose text was not sufficiently veiled in symbolism, or which had any

[[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------
* Prof. Max Muller shows that no bribes or threats of Akbar could
extort from the Brahmans the original text of the Veda; and boasts
that European Orientalists have it (Lecture on the "Science of
Religion," p. 23). Whether Europe has the complete text is very
doubtful, and the future may have very disagreeable surprises in
store for the Orientalists.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

[[Vol. 1, Page]] xxiv INTRODUCTORY.
direct references to the ancient mysteries, after having been
carefully copied in cryptographic characters, such as to defy the art
of the best and cleverest palaeographer, was also destroyed to the
last copy. During Akbar's reign, some fanatical courtiers, displeased
at the Emperor's sinful prying into the religions of the infidels,
themselves helped the Brahmans to conceal their MSS. Such was
Badaoni, who had an undisguised horror for Akbar's mania for
idolatrous religions.*

Moreover in all the large and wealthy lamasaries, there are
subterranean crypts and cave-libraries, cut in the rock, whenever the
gonpa and the lhakhang are situated in the mountains. Beyond the
Western Tsay-dam, in the solitary passes of Kuen-lun** there are
several such hiding places. Along the ridge of Altyn-Toga, whose soil
no European foot has ever trodden so far, there exists a certain
hamlet, lost in a deep gorge. It is a small cluster of houses, a
hamlet rather than a monastery, with a poor-looking temple in it,
with one old lama, a hermit, living near by to watch it. Pilgrims say
that the subterranean galleries and halls under it contain a
collection of books, the number of which, according to the accounts
given, is too large to find room even in the British Museum.***

All this is very likely to provoke a smile of doubt.

TO COMPARE THE PRESENCE, AND FREQUENCY OF USE, OF SOME KEY WORDS IN
